After a tongue thrashing from his doctor, Richard Sifkitz turns his addiction to fatty foods into an addiction to a fantasy world created around his stationary bike, spending hours a day pedaling away. But as his obsession grows, the lines between fantasy and reality dim and he believes someone or something is trailing him on his path. Ron McLarty, who previously recorded King's Salem's Lot and Faithful, delivers this novella with an excellent pace and easy disposition. His controlled reading creates a much tenser atmosphere with surprises and plot twists made more shocking without the advance warnings of a more dramatic reading. The jazzy segues between chapters lightens the tone just enough to make the listener feel uncertain about where King is taking this story. King's writing style is quite agreeable to the audio format, making for an enjoyable although slightly dark tale. This novella was published in the anthology Borderlands 5(Reviews, Jan. 19, 2004). About the Author
Stephen King is the author of more than fifty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. Great stuff.

Not much here

The middle aged hero of this story has gotten fat after the death of his wife and his cholestorol has gone sky high so he goes on a crash diet and buys a stationary bike. Being an artist he draws a picture of a lovely country road to a tiny town in upsatate New York on his wall. After a few weeks things get weird and our hero finds that while he's losing that flab he's also traveling on the road for real and somehow he's angered the workmen--- the guys, real guys somehow who maintain the road which is really his own body.

This is dreary cauationary tale for fat guys has too much cursing, too much product placement and there's only one good scary moment: the scene in Carlos's garage. Other than that one scene I did not care about the hero or what was waiting for him at the end of the road.

I don't want to say that the King is dead but maybe he's under a spell, or stunned or sleeping or something because this story just didn't take off. I'm not saying that I want King to write like he did in Carrie or Salem's Lot because that is impossible but I do wish he could get his literary groove back. Stationary Bike was just lackluster and wouldn't even scare a nervous two year old.

Solid storytelling. I have to disagree with those that didn't like (better yet, love) this short story. Stephen King is at his best here. For those who loved, The Long Walk, I think this story is a sure-win to entertain. It kept my attention and made me feel like I was actually riding on Richard Sifkitz kick-pegs. Do it again, Stevie!

The poems in this anthology celebrate a map, a man, and a science. The science is geology. The man is William Smith (1769 - 1839), civil engineer and geologist. The map is Smith's masterpiece: A Delineation of the Strata of England and Wales, with part of Scotland, the first geological map of an entire country, published in 1815. 2 As a working engineer, not a gentleman, Smith was unable to become a member of the newly formed Geological Society. His contribution to the new science of geology was initially dismissed by the Society, which set out to produce its own rival map. Coupled with some imprudent investments, Smith's venture culminated in a stretch in debtor's prison. By the time of his death in 1839, however, Smith's achievements had been recognised; in 1831 he was awarded the Geological Society's first Wollaston Medal in recognition of his work, and honoured by the Society's President, Adam Sedgwick, as 'the father of English geology'. To mark the two hundredth anniversary of its publication, I invited a number of poets to respond to the map, Smith's life, and his legacy. I was thrilled by the generosity and enthusiasm with which they embraced this invitation and the different routes their poems took. It was a pleasure to introduce many of them to the Geological Society's map up close and to listen to their astute and creative observations. There are poems in this anthology that tell the story of Smith's genius and his misfortune; poems about fossil hunting and map making; poems about the drive of the Industrial Revolution and our continuing reliance on fossil fuels. When most of us look at a map we look for home, and the same is true of many of these poets. But Smith's alien cartography of colour makes us see home in a radically different light, and so the poets, representing the geographical reach of Smith's map, confront the reader with new ways of seeing the landscape and history of Britain. Their poems illustrate not only the vibrancy and variety of contemporary poetry but also poetry's unique ability to take on uncharted territory with vision, to make connections and find relevance: the poems here make Smith's map anew in moving and surprising ways.

Some good Guidance but not a Toolkit

This book gives some very good guidance , especially regarding insurance required for consultants, writing proposals and follow up.

If you plan to make a living by writing and giving speeches, then this book is also for you. If you are maybe in IT or Logistics and need help to e.g. write client proposals or follow up with clients, this book offers excellent advice.

However, if you are expecting this book to cover all the basics you need to know to start or grow your business, it falls short of its title. This book is definitely not a tool kit. Examples:

a) The equipment checklist is technically outdated. Apart from the fact that we are in the age of CD & DVD burners, the biggest oversight is the lack of mentioning the need for data backup facilities.

b) The section on finances is very 'thin' and only gives very top level information. You are much better off buying a separate book on this subject such as 'Self-Employed Tax Solutions' by June Walker.

c) The section on forms also covers a bare minimum. The expense form example on page 96 does e.g. not include a column for phone charges.

As examples for various forms, websites etc. Alan Weiss constantly refers to himself rather than making up some alternative examples. You can either see that as giving a successful example or pure self promotion.

Overall a useful book as long as you take some of this recommendations with a grain of salt. A title such as 'Writing Successful Client Proposals' would be more appropriate though.

Alan again proves that he can put more info in 200 pages than any other business adviser. Buy it, read it, keep it nearby to refer to it.

BTW, Alan's most valuable book is "How to Write A Proposal That's Accepted Every Time." A close second is "Value Based Fees."

About the Author
Andrew M. Leeds, PhD

, is a California-licensed psychologist and marriage and family therapist with 40 years of experience in the private practice of psychotherapy. He practices in Santa Rosa, CA. He is the director of training for Sonoma Psychotherapy Training Institute, which offers basic and advanced training programs in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Dr. Leeds received his BA in psychology with honors in 1972 from the University of California at Santa Cruz, an MA in clinical psychology in 1974 from Goddard College, and his PhD in clinical psychology in 1983 from International College. After early training in gestalt and somatic psychotherapies, Dr. Leeds served a 2-year internship as program coordinator for an alcohol abuse treatment program in Santa Cruz and received his license as a marriage and family therapist before going on to obtain his doctorate. During his doctoral program, he studied cognitive behavioral therapy, Ericksonian hypnosis, and self-psychology. Dr. Leeds received his initial EMDR therapy training in 1991 and became an EMDR therapy training supervisor that same year. In 1993, he became an EMDR therapy trainer. He has conducted basic EMDR therapy trainings for 15,000 clinicians at 140 training programs in the United States, Canada, France, England, and Japan. He has presented papers on EMDR therapy for regional, national, and international conferences. He is the author of a book, book chapters, and journal articles on EMDR therapy. He served for 2 years on the Standards and Training Committee of the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) and for 3 years as an elected member of the EMDRIA Board of Directors. He presently serves as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the

Journal of EMDR Practice and Research

and, in 2013, was the guest editor for volume 7, issue number 3. He is an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant providing consultation to EMDR therapy clinicians around the world. Dr. Leeds contributed to the evolution of EMDR by articulating, publishing, and teaching the EMDR procedure that he named

Resource Development and Installation

Glad it wasn't an acid trip freak show like the movie!!!

The movie of the same name was a massive freak show, so I'm glad I took a chance on the book... it's utterly different! It was sort of a disappointment at the end, but certainly more true to the real world. The book was written in 1963, but there must have been revisions later because Watergate is mentioned. And even though some parts of the book seem almost technologically prophetic, like the spheres that hold a bunch of music (reminded me of ipods), there's no way the writer could have prophesied Watergate by name almost 10 years prior to the event. I'd like to read an original 1963 copy of the book to find out how many changes were made. At any rate, the story was so much better than the movie, made so much more sense, and I really enjoyed it (unlike the movie, where I felt like somebody had spiked my drink with bad tabs of liquid sunshine and I had to hide in a dark corner for 9 hours, eating orange slices till it was over). :-)

My Favorite Martian

This is not only a review of the novel, but a follow-up to my review of the film (qv).

Anyone attempting to adapt "The Man Who Fell to Earth" has two problems. One is that our understanding of the story depends almost wholly on knowing what's going on in Newton's mind. This isn't easy in a film, but other directors have done it, without having to resort to voice-over narration. And Tevis conveniently provides a scene near the end where Newton explains things to a Terran friend. *

The other problem is that Newton is tall and very thin, having evolved on a planet with a 1/3 of Earth's gravity. A critical turning point in the story occurs when a jerking elevator causes him to break a leg. This wouldn't be plausible with a Terran actor, even one of very slight build. **

Roeg's "solution" to these problems seems to have been casting David Bowie. His naturally odd appearance (he somewhat resembles the novel's Newton) is, I guess, supposed to suggest that something odd is going on in his mind. Roeg apparently thought that was enough.

Unlike the film, there is little ambiguous about the book. We know in the first few pages how beautiful Newton finds Earth, compared to the dry dustiness of his home world, Anthea. *** Despite his longing to be with his Anthean family and friends, he is aware of the Earth's seductive beauty (especially the abundant water -- he brags, in an understated way, about owning the lake near his house), and worries that he might become overly attached.

In the novel, Newton's "descent" is neither as extreme nor vulgarly excessive as Roeg portrays it. Though he starts drinking after his leg is broken, alcohol does not have the intense effect on him that it has on Terrans. It's more of a sedative that dulls his sense of loneliness and -- uh -- alienation. Nor does he become sexually involved with women, or search for sensual pleasures. He was never strongly "connected" with the Earth, and gradually becomes increasingly disconnected.

Roeg apparently thought audiences wouldn't be happy with an introspective story lacking sex and violence, so he throws these things in, including the pointless murder of the president of Newton's company, and changing Newton's 40-year-old housekeeper to a twenty-something. He also drastically alters the point of Newton's visit, which is to build a shuttlecraft to ferry the 300 remaining Antheans to Earth -- not to obtain water.

In short... Roeg trashed up a perfectly good novel. It's yet another example of how directors butcher books to suit their own tastes.

Walter Tevis is merely a "good" writer, not a great one, but the book's conceit is so pregnant, and as Tevis generally lets it speak for itself, the story gains a dark charm, rather than being merely an ideological exposition.

Highly recommended, especially if you've seen the terrible film.

* I note with pleasure that Tevis repeatedly refers to Newton as human. He is, of course, just as Klingons and Vulcans are.

** Tall (Newton is 6'4"), very thin people are uncommon, and unheard-of among actors. Compared to Newton, Jimmy Stewart is Hulk Hogan. Even Guy Pearce is too fleshy.

*** Though Tevis never directly states it, Newton's home world of Anthea is Mars. Anthea is obviously (???) an anagram of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom.
