Shakespeare Meets the RomCom

This story is the closest you can get to a mad cross between a Shakespearean comedy and a romcom.
Not to say it isn't entertaining, but it's the sort of entertaining that makes you want to pull your hair out and slap all of the characters silly for being such idiots.
Jessie Bain is the heroine - a beautiful, orphaned, mistreated girl. Hubert Varrick is the passionate, conflicted hero, engaged to the haughty, flirtatious Gerelda. The nonsense begins with Gerelda driving the already-disturbed Captain Frazier into a madness of love on the night before her wedding, causing him to kidnap her at the altar with such mystery that Hubert believes himself to be jilted. Jessie Bain comes into his household and protection after being threatened by her uncle, and Hubert soon falls in love with her.
Meanwhile, Gerelda is being held captive by the Captain, who firmly believes that in time Gerelda will come to love him. He poisons her hope that Hubert will come find her with news of Jessie living in Hubert's home. Somehow she escapes and disguises herself as a seamstress to work in the Varrick's house, to observe Jessie and Hubert. She discerns Mrs. Varrick's disgust with Jessie's low status and Hubert's attention, so while Hubert is away she accuses the girl of stealing a diamond bracelet and tricks her into signing a document that admits she committed the crime before sending her away with a promise to never speak to Hubert again.
When Hubert returns, he falls into a rage and leaves his mother's house, determined to find Jessie. We follow Jessie through a series of sad events, where she becomes an actress innocent of the wiles and bad reputations of the actresses of the time, until she is driven off and finds work as a companion to an elderly woman who knew her uncle. In the house of the old woman is the selfish and beautiful Rosamond, who is jealous of Jessie's beauty and harshly assigns her as much work as she can. She sends Jessie out into a snowstorm to get ribbon, and to her shock Jessie never returns.
The ending is infuriating and wonderful and exciting, but it is happy. A fun read on a rainy day.

A huge twisting tale!

READY~SET~GO! This is a very much too~fantastic~to~be~true~tale. It has so many twists upon twists, one right after the other, & yet still amazing, happening to the same 2 or 3 characters. There are a slew of incidents; kidnapping, forgery, accidents, fainting, people lost or missing, driven away, amnesia, & a lot of foolishment along with these things. Still, I promise you will never be bored reading this WHOPPER OF A TALE! I declare I was not sure whether to be sympathetic to Gerelda, to Jessie, or to Hubert at times. But, as they say, "Love Finds Its' Own Way". It is worth reading but, just be prepared for your head to spin, & don't dare skip a page or you may lose somebody, that quick! Have fun on this one!

Over the top.

Even with the suspension of disbelief that is required, this book was very unbelievable and over the top. The lead characters were unbelievable, with an over the top blend of noble martyr and long suffering victim. (SPOILER) - Really - she goes from being orphaned to living with her uncle in an abusive home, to falling in love with the hero, being mistreated by his mother, of course, he's in love with her, but she leaves - swearing to never tell him why, so even after he finds her in - yes, you guessed it - yet another abusive situation where she was being noble and long suffering, she still refuses to tell him why she left.... Oh, and we can't forget about his kidnapped fiance that he no longer loves (being in love with the Jessie, of course), who is then rescued, reunited with the hero, they get married (though he is now in a depression, because heroine has run away from the home he shared with his mom), and on their honeymoon they experience a shipwreck, where she is believed to be killed. Of course, she isn't, she's injured and out of her mind, and cared for, you guessed it - by Jessie, who is now living back with her uncle.... And, this is just SOME of the obstacles they encounter...
I love books of all types, ranging from serious non fiction to fantasy, science fiction, romance, comedy, the classics, you name it. However, the suspension of disbelief to "get into" this book was just too much. I hate to say it, but by the end, I was actually rooting AGAINST the hero and heroine, because I was so fed up with them both.
