je lis ces chroniques de Jean Froissart en anglais car en fran�ais elles co�tent horriblement cher. Mais cette version en anglais est proprement illisible : il manque syst�matiquement des lettres aux mots. On doit donc deviner ! On s'accroche parce que le texte est extraordinaire enfin, on est scotch�. Froissart est l'un des plus grands �crivains fran�ais. Il y a une fraicheur chez lui, une vivacit� et toujours ces paroles cit�es qui nous am�nent en chair et en os du moyen �ge au temps pr�sent. un sens du rythme aussi. bref, malgr� la souffrance du d�chiffrage, c'est un enchantement de chaque page. j'h�site entre une �toile (pour l'�dition) et cinq �toiles. Mais pour Ma�tre Jean je donne 6 �toiles et davantage.

Completing something far less than a full makeover—like a task that can be done in an evening—could be a genuine confidence builder. And the book is solidly apartment-friendly. There is some gold, like the steps to reupholster a chair, hidden in tips for framing and stenciling accessories. This book is a natural for beginners. Generally a success, with a few flat notes

I will start with a disclaimer that I am an avid blog follower, and am thus biased to like anything written by the Petersiks. As someone who was determined to love the book regardless of any flaws, I will do my best to be honest and objective in my appraisal.

I had very high expectations for this book, and was incredibly excited to see that it had arrived at my house. I eagerly cracked it open and began reading. Overall, I would definitely recommend the book to any home decor enthusiast, but I have to painfully admit I was slightly underwhelmed. Most of my excitement flipping through the pages was driven more by the cute captions, glimpses of well known Petersik personnel (Gee, Clara, and Ramsey make appearances for any other YHL enthusiasts out there), and the personal forewards to each chapter, than by the majority of the actual projects.

That's not to say there aren't gems inside; many very creative and useful ideas fill the pages (i.e. personalizing thrift store decor, creating your own artwork, alternatives to traditional knife blocks). Not to mention step by step instructions for painting furniture and cabinets, as well as a 'dummy guide' to a variety of DIY topics such as curtains and paint finishes. However, I felt that being a YHL reader was actually a detriment in some ways to finding novel inspiriation from the book. Very few projects were truly original to the book, most I skimmed through having read similar projects on the blog. That being said, even with some concepts being 'repeats', it will be nice in the future to have everything bound in one volume, easily accesible without the internet.

I appreciate the formatting of the book. John and Sherry did a fantastic job of categorizing projects by the relative expense, difficulty, and time needed for execution. There is a great balance between easy and cheap projects, with those that are a bit more labor and cost intensive. Many projects can also be easily personalized to an individual's tastes and preferences. Most projects, although not all, also include 'in-progress' photos to illustrate difficult steps, such as how to properly fold the corners of fabric when covering a dining room seat or headboard.

Other readers have complained about the quality of the pictures inside; I personally found the photo layouts to be well executed, and aside from old childhood photographs, thought the quality to be acceptable. I do agree that the finish of the book ( a matte paper versus glossy sheen) is a bit cheap-looking, but think this reflects more on the publishers than the authors themselves.

In summary, I was definitely pleased with the book and plan to gift copies to several friends and relatives over the holidays. In my opinion, it is a book that anyone with a love of DIY, home improvement, or decor, would appreciate, but also agree with other reviewers that those looking for a more advanced or detailed how-to book will be left wanting more. For what the authors intended it to be, a very basic spring board of ideas, the book is highly successful and as a first book I think the Petersiks should be proud.

disappointing content and design of the book

I read the YHL blog semi-regularly, and, even though there are times when their design aesthetic is the complete opposite of mine, I keep reading because they have some good basic DIY design and decorating ideas and tips, and because they seem like fun, genuinely sweet people. I was excited about their book, and I even stood in line for four hours to have them sign a copy of the book. Well, it turns out that four hours of standing in line was long enough for me, and a friend, to read the book and decide that it would be a waste of money to purchase it. There were maybe 3 or 4 ideas, out of the 200+ in the book, which I would actually want to try to replicate, or that seemed somewhat fresh and inspiring. Most of the other ideas were very basic, or have been done (and, more stylishly done) before, on their blog or elsewhere on the internet, and the remaining ideas were downright ridiculous - putting your knives in a clear jar filled with macaroni is a design/decorating idea? Also, I agree with another reviewer who commented on the poor design of the book itself. The cover is pretty bland, and somewhat garish, and the inside is not beautiful or inspiring enough for me to want to buy the book despite the bland ideas in it. On the positive side, the writing seemed sweet, quirky, and very readable, just like it is on their blog.

In this era of Pinterest and beautiful design blogs, design books have to be fresh, beautiful, and inspiring - and should have a lot of substantive content - in order to be worth the money. I'll stick to reading their blog, where I have found some good design tips and project ideas.

Not up to the hype

I follow the Petersik's blog and I admit that I was looking forward to the book. Over the last few months, the Petersiks built up anticipation for the book on their blog by repeatedly saying "we can't show you this yet because we did it for the book!"

Well, I'd estimate that the book is maybe 25% new material. And much of the new stuff is just a slightly different iteration of something they have done before, in great detail, online. (Yes, I know that you can spray paint almost anything a bright color and make it cute.) That, combined with the book's poor production values, means that you can learn everything you need about "Petersik Style" from the Young House Love blog and the book adds little.

The Petersiks' disappointing foray into print media has convinced me that for home decorating ideas, online pictures, instructions, and video are far superior communication methods. In other words, read the blog and save your money.

Comprehensive and very readable historical and artistic survey of botanical illustration

First published in 1950, this classic is still considered the definitive work on the subject. The book was revised and enlarged by ACC in 2000, and published to overwhelming acclaim; this is a reprint of that edition. It provides a comprehensive, critical and well-illustrated survey of the portrayal of plants through more than three thousand years.

Of the first edition, the poet and gardening writer, Vita Sackville-West, after referring in The Observer to the wealth of illustration and the fascination of the text, then said, "Let no one think this is a book only for the specialist. It is essential for the specialist, certainly, but it is also for all the flower-lovers and all those who enjoy the by-ways of biography and the added attraction of good writing".

Wilfrid Blunt, an artist himself, brought to it a craftsman's appreciation and knowledge gained from experience, the extensive literature and visits to many galleries on the Continent. William T. Stearn gave him much help on botanical, biographical and bibliographical matters and contributed part of the text.

Professor Stearn has revised and enlarged this classic work and greatly extended the chapter on the twentieth century. This edition includes 126 color plates (more than twice as many as the original 1950 edition) and 140 black and white illustrations, thus making available to the general public numerous examples of the work of great botanical illustrators past and present.

One of the attractions of this voluminous book is its varying approach to the long and somewhat complex history of botanical illustration―going back to the herbals and other illustrated books of antiquity―keeping the material fresh and engaging. About the Author
Wilfrid Blunt (1901-87) was an art master at Haileybury College and at Eton College, Windsor. On his retirement in 1959 he became Curator of the Watts Gallery, near Guildford, Surrey. Here Blunt devoted most of his time to writing and travel and published some twenty-five books. William Stearn (b.1911) has had an almost lifelong interest in botanical illustration. His numerous publications include Botanical Latin,Australian Flower Paintings of Ferdinand Bauer, Merian in Surinam,Plant Portraits from the Flora Danica, Flower Artists of Kew and The Orchid Paintings of Franz Bauer.

update of outstanding volume on the history and styles of botanical illustration also relevant as a collecting guide

As one would look for in a book such as this, the illustrations are fine. These vary from 126 color illustrations, many of which are full-page color plates, to numerous black-and-white, some as large as half a page. There’s an illustration on nearly every page. One of the appendices is a listing of the many color illustrations with annotations adding to the captions including medium and location (e. g., museum) or ownership. The work is outstanding and can be appreciated for its visual quality alone, plus the range of this.

For readers looking for a history, analysis, and expert commentary on botanical illustration through the ages, the text too stands out. Author of several books of specific topics of botanical art including particular countries (e. g., Surinam) and artists (e. g., Ferdinand Bauer), Stearn is exceptionally knowledgeable about details pertaining to particular eras, styles, and artists in this historical and perennially popular field of art. Blunt, art teacher and curator, brings a broader, relatively generalized, and aesthetic interest to the text. For the original edition of 1950, Stearn was Blunt's assistant. Blunt did an enlarged updated edition. For this third edition, the content has been redesigned for contemporary readers.

The book of 24 chapters makes use of both of the authors’ strengths; which are seamlessly intertwined. Some chapters lean toward art history and related aesthetics, while others are on particular notable, influential, or representative artists putting them into both historical and cultural context and referring to other artists of the period. "The Rebirth of Naturalism" and "England in the Early Nineteenth Century" exemplify historical chapters; with "Rabel, Robert and Aubriet" and "The Age of Redoute" exemplifying the chapters on artists. Content of respective types of chapters is always a matter of emphasis, however, with each being multifaceted with respect to content. One learns about particular artists as a historical time is covered; and conversely, one learns about the historical time as a named artist is the focus. One of the attractions of this voluminous book is its varying approach to the long and somewhat complex history of botanical illustration—going back to the herbals and other illustrated books of antiquity—keeping the material fresh and engaging. And all along, there are those handsome, fetching illustrations, especially the color ones.

A third level of involvement with the book after its visual quality and substantive text is the first appendix of eight short articles on botanical drawing by W. H. Fitch from the "Gardner's Chronicle" in 1869 and the
following three appendices of bibliography. Not exhaustive as no book of art history apart from an encyclopedia could be, "The Art of Botanical Illustration" nevertheless affords an ample, outstanding, and reliable course of study on its subject.

It is to be noted too that art collectors, antique dealers, print collectors, art shop owners, and such would find the book a collecting guide and an especially informative and attractive general reference for the field. Botanical illustrations bound into antiquarian books or as art work prints standing by themselves, often removed from books, are a currently popular area in collecting and auctions. This probably has something to do with the current social interests in environmentalism and climate and others drawing attention to the natural world. Botanical prints, however, basically need no such topical justification as their beauty and often exquisite artistry speaks for itself.

BUY THIS BOOK AS IT WILL SOON SELL OUT

This important work by the late, greats Wilfrid Blunt and Dr.William T.Stern is considered the Bible for botanical illustration, and I am thrilled to see that the Antique Collectors Club has at long last republished this key book.

This book is an essential reference for anyone interested in the history of botanical illustration. While the book is expensive, it is well worth it, and I would recommend its purchase in the near term before it is sold out as I suspect that the book is a limited edition.

I have done reviews for previous editions. The first edition of this book dates back 65+, but the greatest edition was done in the 1994 as the great botanist and important author of historical botanical illustration, William T. Stern joined the famous Wilfred Blunt in his final edition. Upon completion, both men quickly moved to publish the very special Baby Elephant Folio (1976), a tribute to the works of my favorite illustrator, Ferdinand Bauer, and this proved to be the last work of Wilfrid and not too soon after, Dr.Stern also ended his life's work.

Both men left us a huge legacy, and a large corpus of publications. THE ART OF BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION is generally viewed by experts and laymen alike as their greatest work.

I sincerely thank the Antique Collectors Club for this edition. It truly is a tribute to these late, great authors.

Well, kiddies, we’ve certainly seen a lot of changes since we last we got together.

The good news is that streaming is growing at a wonderful pace. And that’s about it for the good news.

CD sales are under 25% of the business and dropping. Downloads have fallen 15% per year for the last few years. Piracy is alive and well, hiding under cyber-rocks, and YouTube delivers more audio-only music than all the other sites put together (including the pirate sites), for which the creators are paid very little (we’ll talk more about that later). All in all, the industry earnings are almost half of what they were in 2003. Also, we’re going through a major upheaval in the songwriter world that could radically change the industry.

Otherwise, it’s a lovely afternoon.

On the brighter front, we’re seeing huge growth in vinyl (to younger people, it’s a new technology; go figure) that’s only held back because every vinyl plant on the planet is at full capacity. The bad news is that it’s less than 2% of the business. But in the current state of affairs, we’ll take what we can get.

It's 2016 and you (Donald Passman) is still giving examples and advise using physical music sales. And I noticed some of the information in your new book, are just cutouts from your older books. You barely scratched the surface on digital artist, digital labels and digital sales in this so called "updated book". All of your research and ideas are based on old-school ideas. AND...You kept referencing your information to bands, old fashioned way of writing and producing music. Nobody works like this anymore. most artist I know, do-it-all! They are the label, the writer, the producer, the artist, and some are also famous DJ's. Did you know that Electronic music DJ's earn more than bands and even more then the famous pop star singers? research that for your next book. disappointed with this purchase... amazon not letting me return it. :/
