To make matters worse, after moving to Los Angeles to learn more about his heritage from his Aunt Moira and his cousin Kalista, Caleb now struggles through life-and-death matters. He keeps angering the werewolves in charge of the shifter world, especially Kalista's boyfriend Peter, the Southern California alpha's son, who also happens to be grade-A sociopath. Worse, Caleb's floundering to keep his secret from Joanna.

While his family offers him some support, they may not be enough as Caleb realizes that the rules in shifter society---number one is supposed to be don't kill humans---are not so ironclad. Some werewolf out there is leaving a blood-soaked trail across the Midwest and it might just be with the alpha's blessing...

The Fur Flies!

Quite good for a debut novel.

This is the story of Caleb from North Carolina, who wakes up one morning to find that he's a dog. Fortunately, his dog happens to speak human, and is able to calm him down until his father comes home, when he is able to communicate in a rather interesting way to his father that he isn't some stray (nice n a shifter book that the parent knows from the beginning and the kid has a support system). You see, Caleb's mother skipped town 6 years ago, and never bothered to tell her son and husband that she's from a family of canine shifters. Big point not to mention, huh?

Caleb winds up in Los Angeles, where they find they have an entire family of shifters. He makes lots of friends, at least one enemy, discovers a fiendish crime, and reconciles with his girlfriend (you know, the one who is always the last to know).

This is definitely a series and the author says that the second part comes out in the winter, and I will definitely be reading it. A few problems I had: (1) Ms. Bridger creates a Clark Kent / Lois Lane situation (almost exactly). It's been done - a lot. I hate it when the GF/BF is the last to know. The first person I would probably turn to in this situation is my girlfriend, especially how Caleb and Jo seem to love each other. They did this on "Teen Wolf" but, thank God, it didn't take an entire season for the girl to find out. (2) The evil villainous is unnecessarily cruel to Caleb. I get that this is a series, and that he has no choice but to work with her, but come on, she doesn't have to be a witch about it (well, she kind of has to, but...). I don't know why, but I think these two will become allies of sorts as the series progresses, because she apparently has no one in her life, and can help her with her work.

All in all, a great book. It's told in the first person, and Ms. Bridge nails guy speak perfectly (some books, the guys sound like women and vice versa). He is extremely likable, and I rooted for him all the way. Caleb is quite a likeable guy. The secondary characters are quite good, and I really liked that the father supported his son 100%, accepting the bizarre while not quite understanding it. Clueless unsupportive parents just don't work in shifter books, and this one did - a lot. Even the "enemy" was somewhat likeable and interesting.

All in all, an excellent debut. I look forward to more from Ms. Bridger. I would definitely enjoy corresponding with her, as she writes so well!

Entertaining

I found Shifted Perspective to be very entertaining. The main character, Caleb has a lot of support from family, friends, and even his dog during the unusual changes that he is experiencing. This is very refreshing! The characters are developed through out the book and some have a little mystery to them that makes you look forward to reading more. The author has set up the book very well to go in many different directions with the characters and various potential plots so you are not sure which direction she is going to go in the series. I am looking forward to the release of the second book!

A Different Kind of YA Shifter Novel.

Caleb thinks that the most he has to worry about is tuition, and leaving his dad on his own when he gets an early admissions letter to Duke University to study engineering. That's until he wakes up naked in the basement one morning.
No knowing what's going on, he thinks he must have started sleep-walking, but nothing prepares him for the morning he wakes up to find that he isn't himself at all - in fact he has paws and fur, and can understand everything his pet dog is saying!
Unfortunately for Caleb, he's turned into a cocker spaniel, one of the least magical and ferocious things he can think of to turn into.
Hiding it from his dad isn't an option, and the second time it happens he has to confess. Luckily his dad is happy to help him, although his dreams of Duke are over - how could he possibly hide this from a roommate?
More surprises are in store when it seems that Caleb isn't the only member of his family who's able to do this, and he suddenly finds himself in a `pack' situation in LA where his mother's estranged family live.

This was an interesting little book with a fairly unique idea that I hadn't really heard of before. I loved that Caleb shifted into something less than spectacular, although he did unfortunately have to put up with some more standard `pack' rules once he got to LA.
I thought that the number of shifters Caleb's family claimed to exist was a pretty sizeable number, and was a little unsure as to how such a large number of shifters could remain under the radar, but they seemed to manage fairly well.
I felt really sorry for Caleb at times. He hadn't exactly had a normal upbringing due to his mother's absence, and it seemed really unfair that not only was he unable to take his place at Duke, but he was also unable to tell the girl that he loved exactly what was going on either.

Overall; a different kind of YA shifter novel!

Death for people is not floating on fluffy clouds while playing harps (who came up with that?!). Death is merely the moving out of the human garment. If we don't clear up the wrongs we have committed, we will reap what we sow--in life OR in death--and that may mean coming back to Earth to face up to our past. The author presents this in a very clear, concise way that everyone can understand.

The cover art and the title are chilling -- in the end, when we die, it is OUR karma (OUR sins) we have to face. But this book is not just doom and gloom! Quite the contrary: the good news is that we can use this lifetime to clear up our wrongs...this book is a good first step toward understanding the importance of how we live our lives. Very grateful to have read it -- 5 stars!

This book really helps explain what death is all about. I liked the explanation and now I understand why people are fearful but when you understand what sowing and reaping is all about it can change your life! It seems our culture does not teach us how our soul lives on and is responsible for how life is lived.

I was attracted to this book by its unique title and wanted to know what was meant by Everyone Dies For Himself Alone, Living and Dying In Order to Keep Living. Death is not a popular subject for obvious reasons, however, the explanations and insight in this little gem of a book have made me think about death in a way I have never thought of before. Such as, death is simply a transformation from one existence to another. I am still in the process of reading this book and find it to be a real page-turner and highly recommend it!
