Technoshamans is a humorous, illuminating narrative non-fiction book in which the author roams the world searching for places where technology and spirituality intersect. The driving force of the book is the narrator’s quest for relief for a bad back which has tortured him for twenty years.

Armed with his notebook, his experience as a veteran reporter for one of Italy’s largest daily papers, and an open heart and mind, Carlo Pizzati embarks on a spiritual and medical quest taking him from a medical office in Northern Italy, where a “posturologist” glues tiny white dots to his front teeth, to the rarefied – and affluent – mountain air of Boulder, Colorado, where he tries Rolfing massage and studies with the legendary founder of American Ashtanga yoga. From there, it’s only a hop and a skip to California, where he is hooked up to the cutting-edge of computer diagnostics: a fancy high-tech toy called a SCIO or Scientific Consciousness Interface Operating System, which uses tiny energy pulses to “read” his orthopedic problem. The diagnosis, fittingly for California, is “a karmic social crime committed in 1685 by a prior incarnation.” For an Italian, three hundred plus years is a just a few family members away.

Clearly, it is time for him to deepen his investigations. Thus begins the second movement of Technoshamans, which takes him all over the world in a kind of post-modern medical picaresque. Still interested in probing the relationships between technology and spirituality, medicine and mindfulness, he flies back to his homeland to sample some of the local youth culture and put his quest in perspective. He attends several raves, lasting all day and all night designed specifically to induce visions through electronic music, in the mountains above Portofino. These inspire him to travel through the underworld of techno-pagans, that is to say, the sort of spiritual healers found in both Wicca and shamanism that lean heavily on tradition, but also rely on modern technology.

As both a participant and witness, he is shaken by what he finds. From there he deepens his spiritual understanding in Argentina, where he experiences not only the famed indigenous shamans, but also aura-photographing computers and miscellaneous high-tech channeling gadgets.

In the mountains outside Cordoba, he is guided through cinematic meditations and visions related to his backache. No mystical question would be complete without a passage to India. Sure enough, our suffering but still curious narrator eventually fetches up there, first in Bangalore, in India’s Silicon Valley, where he interviews two researchers who study the impact of mantra and meditation on the human nervous system with sophisticated modern software and hardware. He continues on to Mysore, a destination for well-heeled yoga practitioners, and to Kerala, where he discusses technology and spirituality with Dr. Sambhu, a celebrated ayurvedic practitioner known among other things for his mysterious Big Enema, a concoction of oil and herbs carried in the aforementioned diapers by many Chicago commodity traders.

Whether he’s in an ashram in Tamil Nadu, chanting mantras at dusk, or on the beaches of the experimental township of Auroville, a spiritual Disneyland of sorts, being led through a tearful, explosive revelation about his past lives, he continues to dwell on his fundamental themes: the promiscuous relationship we human have with technology as a tool for expanding consciousness, and also the growing insecurity that machines may be about to outstrip our capacity for rational thought and may—just may—achieve a conscience and a rudimentary ego as well.

Can spirituality coexist with the Machine? Are we going to download ourselves into androids? Will spirituality and technology do away with humanity?

Born in Switzerland, but raised in a valley at the foot of the Dolomites north of Venice, he left home at 16 to be schooled in Pensacola, Florida, Washington D.C. and finally get his master in Journalism at Columbia University in New York. Carlo Pizzati's passion for writing stories and for adventure led him to travel the globe for more than 16 years, reporting for the Italian daily newspaper "La Repubblica" from cities as spread out as Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Santiago del Chile, Manila and Shanghai. He also produced and directed 30 investigative documentaries, has been editor in chief of Italy's most viewed website, launched a start up in Madrid and hosted a morning political talk show in Italy, where he's published his first novel, "Crimin�l" No one can quite pin point where he lives, shuttling between India, Italy and California. a hip, compellingly readable user's manual for the modern mind

This book combines travel reportage with dead-pan humor and a deep investigation into the sources of modern spirituality and the means--both ritualistic and technological--to access them. clearly the fruit of loooong immersion in the subjct, it reads like a streak and has the single best description of the practice of meditation i've ever read. imo, technoshamans ranks up there with other classics of spiritual inquiry such as aldous huxley's 'the doors of perception' and the work of jonn c. lilly and terence mckenna.

Truly Excellent!

An autobiographical book that was conceived, and starts with, a calvary due to a chronic backache, leading to a collage of interesting experiences and journeys throughout the world, trying different treatments. But is it really just about a backache?

The author and journalist Carlo Pizzati, suffering from a severe backache for years, finally decides it is time to find out its origin in the hope to cure it once and for all. His journey starts from a posturologist in Vicenza (North of Italy) and it carries on to far away places, looking for the right cure, but does such cure truly exist?

The author then starts on a really unusual journey, furthermore he has just separated from his wife and has a young son, toward whom a deep and indissoluble love is perceived. His journey is not exactly "technical". Rather, his wish to get rid of the pain represents, in my opinion, the beginning to conceive things, and life, under a different perspective, unrolling, like a magic carpet, a world of treatments and intriguing cures that really made me think and ponder.

The author meets up with different people, in a whirlwind of improbable machineries, esoteric and palliative treatments, from Italy to the USA, from Latin America to India. Meetings of every kind, from doctors to shamans, passing through some real charlatan I would say! All of this to try and get rid of a pain that, at this point, I really thought was more psychological than physical.

Some chapters are very emotional, I truly think they are the result of a search for some peace of mind during a rather difficult period of the author's life. He is forever walking around with a heavy rucksack on his shoulders, which in my opinion represents life, symbolically.

However, there are several funny touches, improbable situations that really make you smile or laugh out loud in some instances! Everything is described in a placid irony, very funny and "British style" , where the author is simply a guinea-pig, at the mercy of the next healer.

It will be up to the reader to find out if the author is finally able to get rid of his backache, or if it is at all possible to combine modern technology with spirituality. One thing is for sure. You shall be involved in a truly fascinating journey. I think that describing certain experiences might have represented a sort of relief for the author, something comforting even. Truly a book not to be missed. The narrative is quick, rich in detail, funny, ironic, moving at times. Page after page, it is impossible to put down, you shall read it all in one go.

I am a physician and a writer. Some of the most interesting chats about medicine and spirituality I had with the author of this book, Carlo, who has been a good friend of mine for almost 15 years. So it was no surprise when he wrote this book and it turned out as interesting and thought provoking as our best conversations ever. I recommend this book with enthusiasm and no reservations whatsoever. It will not only entertain you but it may help you as well in your journey towards true health.

John has many years of experience in providing counseling services to individuals and groups in a variety of settings including job training programs, correctional institutions, and colleges and universities. In addition, John has about ten years of teaching experience as an assistant professor. With Kathy Khalsa and Ester Leutenberg, he has written three other comprehensive books for teachers and counselors to use with their students and clients: The Self-Esteem Program, The Social Skills Program and The Stress Management Program: Inventories, Activities & Educational Handouts. With Whole Person Associates, he and Ester Leutenberg continue to co-write books to add to their Mental Health & Life Skills Workbook series. Ester A. Leutenberg has worked in the mental health field for many years as a publisher, author and advocate for those suffering from loss. She personally experienced a devastating loss when her son Mitchell, after struggling with a mental illness for eight years, died by suicide in 1986. Soon after, as a way of both healing and helping others, Ester co-founded Wellness Reproductions & Publishing with her daughter Kathy Khalsa and began developing therapeutic products that help facilitators help their clients. Ester is the co-author of the SEALS series for teen-agers, Life Management Skills series for adults and Meaningful Life Skills for older adults, as well as a variety of other therapeutic card games, board games and posters. Ester has co-written GriefWork ~ Healing from Loss, The GriefWork Companion and Creating a Healthy Balanced Life. Ester and John have co-written the Mental Health & Life Skills Workbook Series, the Teen Mental Health & Life Skills Workbook Series and are currently working on the Coping Workbook Series, all published by Whole Person Associates.

it looks like there are some really great activities

Item shipped quickly. Brand New. Haven't had time to read book thoroughly, but skimming through the book, it looks like there are some really great activities. Correction from last post: This book does not provide lesson plans (Sorry, I got it confused with another book I ordered and was reviewing). I still think it will be a good tool to use with my clients.

Welcome to Miami! We've all had such a completely wicked time filming our new TV show, S Club 7 in Miami, we thought we'd give you a sneak peek at what we've been up to in front if and behind he camera!

I Wish They Released These Scrapbooks For All Of S Club's Shows

S Club 7 In Miami's Official Scrapbook is definitely a gem. I was expecting to recieve the book and see pictures and information about the show that I already knew. However, this book has tons and tons of pictures that I've never seen before! There's at least four pages simply devoted to pictures of the show in a really cute scrapbook style. Also, there are two pages devoted to each S Club 7 member telling a little bit about them. There's a couple of other pages that talk about the show's episodes and their summaries, what songs are performed on what episode, etc. All in all, this was an excellent buy and I only wish S Club's three other TV series were scrapbooked like this! I recommend this to anyone who loves S Club or their series Miami 7.

Great scrapbook

This is a really good book. It has 2 giant posters or S Club, behind the scenes of Miami 7 pictures, a guide to each member containing facts and a full biography page. In each 'Beginners Guide' there is a picture or a S Clubber. It also includes the story guide of the Miami series, along with many other posters it has quotes from the series, the S Club 7 lingo, it also has a whole other page of 25 facts, and a page of 'Classic Moments'. This book is loaded with information and pictures! Go and buy it.

Although this book doesn't really have that much info on the band, it has billions of pictures. There are several fold-out posters, losts of collages, and an episode guide, too.
Even though it's a bit old, every S Club fan should own this!

A former food writer and editor at the Boston Herald, she has also contributed articles to Runner's World, the Boston Globe, The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America, and several literary magazines and anthologies.

A Soup for Everyone

I am in love with this book. Many of my co-workers and I consider it a special treat on days we get to lunch at the New England Soup Factory (their Chili Con Carne is our collective favorite), so I was ecstatic to find a copy of their recipe book while browsing the bookstore over the weekend. And, yes, the Chili Con Carne recipe is included!

There are so many mouth-watering, rich, unique and comfort-food soups that I had a hard time deciding what to make first. From Potato, Crab and Gorgonzola to Apple, Onion and cheddar--they all sound so good! I decided on a vegetarian option: Spinach, Feta Cheese, and Toasted Pine Nut Soup. Not only was it delicious, but it was easy to make.

In addition to the seasonal soups, Druker has included a chapter of sandwiches and salads which are just as appetizing as the soups. (For example; The Fallwich, with sweet potatoes, cranberry mayonnaise, turkey and cashews.)

I know what I'll be getting my whole family for Christmas this year.

One of my favorite cookbooks

Full disclosure: I love soup. So my review is inherently biased. But you want this cookbook. These recipes are easy, most of them are delicious, relatively healthy and a good mix of omnivore and vegetarian recipes. I wish every soup had its own picture but the pictures that are there are very well-done. There are no weird, hard-to-find ingredients and no over the top techniques best left to the pros or serious amateurs. In fact, if you are looking for a cooking challenge, this book will bore you. If i had time to make my own stock I could chastise her for her technique for adding bouillon cubes to "home-made" stock but I don't, so I won't. I use store-bought stock and the soups are still delicious. There are recipes in the back for sandwiches that look and sound really good but I have had so much fun making soup that I haven't done any of those.
The very first soup I made was a lima bean soup. I hate lima beans but I loved that soup. In retrospect, I'm not sure why I chose that as my first recipe out of this book but I'm glad I did as it has made me open to trying recipes I wouldn't normally bother with. The book is well organized starting with various stock recipes (none of which I have made), then chicken soups, tomato soups, chowders, and then by season. The summer soups are mostly cold fruit soups- not my thing- and I haven't made any. The ones I made that I will make again and again: 1. Eggplant parmesan soup - it's worth buying this book just for this recipe it's that good. 2. Black bean and sausage- outstanding. 3. Mulligatawny- so, so very good. Now I know why Seinfeld made an episode just about this soup.
I love this book and use it once a week when the weather is getting cooler. There's no attitude in this book. Some authors make you feel like a failure for not making stock or implying that soup made without it isn't even worth making. This author doesn't. No special equipment is necessary but you will likely need a new soup pot. These recipes make a lot of soup. Most are for twelve servings so get a big pot or halve the recipe. An immersion blender comes in handy but a regular blender will suffice. I used this book as an excuse to get an immersion blender and it's now my favorite kitchen gadget of all. I need to write a review of that too. Other than that, buy this book and make some soup!

My Wife Could Not Believe What She Was Seeing

First, this book is so beautifully made. The pictures are great. The recipes easy to read.
Second, I am not a chef or cook. This was the first and only cookbook I have every purchased. But the "Sweet Potato, Wild Barley, and Chicken" soup just called out to be made. I did it, even creating my own stock per the instructions. My wife (a GREAT cook) could not believe what she was seeing. I even bought a 20 quart All Clad stock pot. Now she really couldn't believe what was happening. But I tell you, that soup was THE BEST. Third, my wife now makes several of the soups found in this book on a regular basis.
Fourth, I am now buying this book for others in my family.
A gem.
