Well, kiddies, we’ve certainly seen a lot of changes since we last we got together.

The good news is that streaming is growing at a wonderful pace. And that’s about it for the good news.

CD sales are under 25% of the business and dropping. Downloads have fallen 15% per year for the last few years. Piracy is alive and well, hiding under cyber-rocks, and YouTube delivers more audio-only music than all the other sites put together (including the pirate sites), for which the creators are paid very little (we’ll talk more about that later). All in all, the industry earnings are almost half of what they were in 2003. Also, we’re going through a major upheaval in the songwriter world that could radically change the industry.

Otherwise, it’s a lovely afternoon.

On the brighter front, we’re seeing huge growth in vinyl (to younger people, it’s a new technology; go figure) that’s only held back because every vinyl plant on the planet is at full capacity. The bad news is that it’s less than 2% of the business. But in the current state of affairs, we’ll take what we can get.

Now if you’re reading this and trying to decide whether the music business will disappear and if you’d be better off putting the price of this book into your stamp collection, there actually is a beautiful weather forecast. It's 2016 and you (Donald Passman) is still giving examples and advise using physical music sales. And I noticed some of the information in your new book, are just cutouts from your older books. You barely scratched the surface on digital artist, digital labels and digital sales in this so called "updated book". All of your research and ideas are based on old-school ideas. AND...You kept referencing your information to bands, old fashioned way of writing and producing music. Nobody works like this anymore. most artist I know, do-it-all! They are the label, the writer, the producer, the artist, and some are also famous DJ's. Did you know that Electronic music DJ's earn more than bands and even more then the famous pop star singers? research that for your next book. disappointed with this purchase... amazon not letting me return it. :/

This series of volumes started with the somewhat disappointing "The Truth is Out There", a book covering 2 seasons in less pages than later volumes covered 1. "Trust No One" followed for Season 3...better than the first volume in comprehensiveness, but nowhere near the depth afforded by "I Want to Believe" (Season 4) "Resist or Serve" (Season 5) and now this one, "The End and the Beginning" (Season 6). Andy Meisler has done the job of providing the definitive print version of the X-Files...the only materials on the X-Files enjoyable even when the power goes out and VCR's computers and DVD's are silent. These books, at very reasonable prices, are must-haves for fans of the show. For people wondering about gaps in their knowledge of the series, these books will fix the problem.

A nice taste of episodic trivia

Some shows have an ambiance that is hard to bottle. Not only do they amaze us when we watch them, but they also amaze us in our recollections. X-Files has long been one of those artifacts, with time sometimes standing still in some of the frames and the show not really aging like you would expect from something started this long ago. One has to give credit to Chris Carter, Kim Manners, David Duchovny and Jillian Anderson for this because they not only made a product but they also reflected pieces of ourselves then that we can lok back on. And with books like this, we can really see exactly what eery piece of the puzzle was.

While some of these guides really started slow, I felt that this one did a nice job. Not only did it show a lot of incite, but it also captured a fair deal of "what is out there" in pictures and commentary. While I am not sure who should get this, myself a fan and rading it as such, I do thing that this in-depth look at "the turth" is enlightening. If nothing else, it captures the show within in the show.

Along with these books, I have also enjoyed the 4 pieces of the X-Files puzzle that show the inner plotlines. Abduction, Black Oil, Colonization, and - to a degree - Super Soldiers are nice works of art that capture the inner dragon and I personally find these all grand. They show the episodes that you need to see to understand things and these books show you what all these things mean. I do think some of it is opinion in a way, to, but a lot of it is plotline. That is the beauty of this thing - it really did have its inner truth.

The book really did score a 4.6/5 or so, rounding it into a 5. It is something I do not think is for everyone, and if you are one of those "needy people" you will know it. I am impressed by this one, more than the others, and think they have gotten better. You can always find snippets of it and see if you agree, making your watching a little more worthwhile.

Max and Kate�had it all until Max's drinking problems drove Kate away in fear of her safety and safety of her unborn child. Eight years on Max is sober and regrets the break up of his marriage. Max doesn't know he is a father so when he runs into Kate�and learns he is a father he is shocked and devastated.

I think Susan Meier did a fantastic job writing about a sensitive issue such as alcoholism and the effects it has on families.

This was one of my favorite books to write and also one of my most responded to books by readers. I love writing about characters with depth and real troubles, even as I get to show that every life has a lighter side!

Kate and Max's daughter, Trisha, doesn't understand adult problems and Max and Kate work to keep her from finding out. What neither expects is that their old love doesn't rekindle. Instead, as two different people, they find a new love.

This completely grabbed me from the start! Max and Kate meeting in the lobby of the hospital, and just the few moments they spend there, where Kate realizes Max has stopped drinking, and Max realizes that he has a daughter - WOW!

Max Montgomery is a real-estate mogul, from a rich family; Kate Hunter left him when he was in a drunken stupor, having become an alcoholic after learning a huge family secret. What he didn't know is that Kate was pregnant when she left him, and she was afraid of him because he was breaking furniture and she thought about how it would be to introduce a baby to that kind of life. What Kate didn't know is that Max became sober shortly after she left. When they meet again, it's in the lobby of the hospital, after Kate's dad has a stroke she comes back to help her mother out, and spend some time with both of her parents.

Max is really angry at first when he understands that Kate has kept his daughter from him. At the same time, he can understand her, he knows that he was behaving in ways incompatible with raising a baby at the time she left him.

It is clear from the start that Max is still in love with Kate, although he is upset about only getting to know Trisha when she's seven years old as well. The first meeting between father and daughter is pretty awkward, but it seems so real, exactly how I would imagine a grown man would interact with a little girl who's his daughter, but not knowing her yet, and not having a lot of experience around children.

Because the one thing she hadn't seen the day before when she'd visited him in her beautiful former house was the crystal vase her parents had scrimped and saved to buy as a wedding gift for her and Max (...) To this day he probably didn't even know he'd thrown it against the fireplace and shattered it into a million pieces, along with her heart - and their marriage. This confuses me a little, the crystal vase her parents gave them for their marriage is what actually pushed her to leave? That's a little shallow, and this story has been far from shallow so far!

I really like to see how both Max and Kate are trying to deal with the new versions of each other, but things become a tad melodramatic at times, and that is too bad. They also behave a little bit like insecure teenagers every now and then, and that seems a little strange, since they are both grown ups, secure in their lives and their jobs.

All in all a story I really liked, and I will for sure check out other books by Susan Meier, a sweet, easy romance, with flowing prose is not something I find everyday! I recommend this book to all romance lovers who like to have some humor and drama sprinkled on their story as well.

4 STARS I like how the characters are trying to deal with thier past troubles. They are trying to do whats best for thier daughter, not what they want. Thier are no warnings about the content of this book. I look forward to reading about Max's brother story that is coming soon but not as fast as I want. Max Montgomery had it all but then through his drinking he lost a lot of the good things in his life that he had. Max has been sober for seven years. He has tried to make up for all his past offenses when he was a drunk, except his ex-wife. Max was coming out of the elevator at the hospital and ran into his ex-wife he has not seen for 8 years. Kate Hunter was planning on telling her husband but the night she was going to he came home in a drunken rage. He broke a lot of things, even the front room window. Kate knew she had to protect her baby from Max and his family, so she ran that night. Max went up to Kate and was telling her that he was sorry he ruined thier marriage when another elevator opened up. Trisha came out and called her mom. One look and Max knew she was his daughter. Kate knew she could not afford to fight Max's family,money and all the judges that they helped get into office. Now seeing Max was sober and wanting to be a father Kate agreed he could see her but not alone for now. Kate was not ready to believe him that he was not a drunk any more and so angry. Max wanted to blame her for keeping his daughter a secret for so long but he knew it was him that made those troubles for his marriage. Kate planned to stay with her parents for 3 months and help while her dad was recovering from a stroke. Max had lots of money but knew he could not buy his daughter with expensive presents. I enjoyed reading this book. Seeing where Kate and Max dealing with the past and learning about who they were now. I got this book a while back and figured it was high time it moved up on my review schedule. It was a fast, easy, yet emotional read and I found myself rooting for this family to have a second chance.

Max has been living sober for the last several years. His alcoholism ruined his marriage and he's never gotten over his love for his ex-wife. As fates would have it, he runs into his ex, Kate, and those old sparks are still there. For him at least. Then, he's hit with a huge shock. Not only did Kate leave him, but she was pregnant when she left. She's never told him about the pregnancy, because she didn't know he was sober. So, the couple tries to figure out the best way to ease Max into their lives.

Max and Trisha (his daughter) develop an easy relationship. Max truly loves being her father. The more time he spends with his daughter, the more he sees Kate as well. Their old feelings for each other never went away and they soon find they are trying to figure out what to do about it. Then, old skeletons come out complicating matters further.

With a cast of truly likable characters, I found myself rooting for them to have a second chance. I do believe that they had a deep love for each other. I loved seeing their love being rediscovered. After all, they both had made life changes, but it was sweet to see that they loved each other even more.

This book was a true romance story that was filled with hope, love, and second chances. If you are a romance fan and love a happy ending, this is a great easy read that will capture your heartstrings.

I cannot tell you how releaved I was when I first heard about Small Data. The number of meetings I’ve attended – the number of conferences I’ve attended all babbling about BIG data – and how wonderful it is – has for some time been like the empires new clothes story. Everyone talked about it, everyone wanted it but no-one has really a clue about what it is and most importantly how to use it.
What I love about Small Data is, beside that the book is extremely well written, that it really makes a very compelling case for the very concept of Small Data. It is a pageturner that’s for sure – which I guess is rare for a book covering what one would think a dry topic like that. But more than that – the book is so convincing, so concise and simple that you end concluding – how obvious – why didn’t I think about it – in fact why is the world so wrong and this book so right.
I noticed that on the authors site he positioned this as a “small” revolution – playing on the word small – I think he’s wrong. Small Data is a BIG revolution, companies after reading this book will without any doubt completely change their mind about the millions of data they obtain and how they see the future. Hopefully we’ll soon see a lot of Small Data Departments around. Needless to say – this is not only an enjoyable and thought provoking book – it is a book everyone in business have to read.

Rabbit Trails

I really enjoyed Buyology but Small Data was just okay. Martin shares some interesting insights into people and their habits but sometimes digressed so much I had to shake my head and remind myself what his original point was or what he was tying to support/prove. It reminded me of talking to a grandparent who feels the need to go off on rabbit trails and you just want them to get to the point.

This book is theory and predictions applied in the real world - very refreshing

I’m a huge fan of trends books and I’ve read them all (or almost). I heard about this book through my reader club - and couldn’t wait to read it. The subtitle “The Tiny Clues That Uncover Huge Trends” just caught my attention. When I’m this excited to read a book it rarely delivers - this book did from the very first page where Martin talks about the Lego story. It is such an amazing insight about how my favorite toy brand avoided bankruptcy by picking up on a trend no-one saw, to become the worlds number 1. What I like about this trend book compared with almost every other book I’ve read in this category is that Martin is real - I mean he doesn't just sit there and write about the future - he’s adapting his trend observations to the real world - and as a result time after time turn around brands out there. He talks about how a supermarket chain in the U.S. (Lowes Foods) was completely turned around based on some fascinating trend observations he made while staying in consumers homes in North Carolina, how he picked up on how girls were using facial powder in Switzerland and as a result helped a fashion chain there to increase sales, or my beloved Roomba recovered its sound (I've always been puzzled why those cute navigation sounds suddenly seemed to have disappeared in the latest model I bought some years go). He convinced Roomba to re-introduce these based on trend observations - and people loved it.
