A quick-guide to being happy (that works)

I rarely re-read books, but this book is highlighted, bookmarked, post-it noted, scribbled in, battered and worn from frequent use. It's 102 pages of practical advice and encouragement to make lists of what makes you happy, what doesn't make you happy, and what you ultimately want for your life. Then it tells you how to keep those goals front and center in your mind on a daily basis, so you don't lose focus. In purely practical terms, I've used this book to help me pay off debt, buy a house, and re-configure my business to work less and make more money (yes, really). I don't read self-help books, but I wouldn't even classify Slaying Dragons in that category. It's more like a quick guide to being happy, and I'm happier for having it on my bookshelf.

A kickstart to a better life

Slaying Dragons and Moving Mountains was really an inspiration and kickstart for me to find meaningful perspective in my life and realize that I, too, can have the type of existence people often only dream of. Sometimes it takes having someone with experience to motivate and break it down for you to see that small actions can lead to large outcomes, and that's exactly what Stefan does in his book - makes greatness feel attainable. And, I'm now successfully inspired to put an action plan together for a future I can, and already do, feel really excited about.

Always wanted to achieve something but weren't sure where to start? Start here.

Regardless of who we are or where we are from, all of us strive to be happier. I really liked "Slaying Dragons and Moving Mountains" because it simplified the art of getting happy and making progress in your life. The book has several "Magic Action" sections which really got me thinking. For example, author Stefan asks readers to list what DOESN'T make you happy. He also talks about 3 year, 1 year and 90 day goals which makes progress towards your goals much less intimidating. This is the kind of book anyone can read quickly and leave feeling inspired, ready to take action and, most importantly, worthy of happiness.

This difficult work, composed at so advanced an age, amidst sufferings almost continual, and numerous occupations, excited at Naples the admiration of learned men. According to Canon Massa, professor of theology and ecclesiastical examiner, the author in his work explains so skilfully the sense and the obscure passages of the psalms, that without taking anything from the purity of the inspired word he aids both the heart and the mind of those that read it. The Holy See has frequently praised and recommended all the works of St. Alphonsus; but the decree of March 23, 1871, which conferred on St. Alphonsus the title of Doctor of the Church, makes special mention of this work, speaking of it as one of his most useful and salutary works. The decree says: “He [St. Alphonsus] has made clear dark passages of the Holy Scriptures, both in his ascetic writings, which are freighted with a celestial odor, and in a most salutary commentary, in which, for the nourishment of piety and the instruction of the soul, he has given expositions of the Psalms, as well as of the Canticles, for the benefit especially of those obliged to its recitation.”

A scholarly study of the psalms...

This is a scholarly study, rather than an inspirational commentary. I was hoping for an explanation of how to pray the psalms better. I think that was not a realistic expectation, given the time in which St. Alphonsus wrote.

Still compelling are his arguments concerning the brevity of the North’s military occupation of the South, the limited amount of power wielded by former slaves, the influence of moderate southerners, the flaws of the constitutions drawn up by the Radical state governments, and the reasons for the downfall of Reconstruction.

John Hope Franklin (1915–2009) was the James B. Duke Professor of History Emeritus at Duke University. He is the author of many books, including Mirror to America: The Autobiography of John Hope Franklin and Racial Inequality in America.

Very worth reading

I completely disagree with those reviewers who found this book to be poorly written or confusing. In my opinion it is neither. I found this book to be very clear and well written. This is a short book that provides many interesting insights into a period of American history that is very often neglected in most history books. If one reviewer found the book confusing it is possibly because this is a very controversial and highly confusing period of American history. This book is a good antidote for those whose knowledge of reconstruction was obtained by the distortions and bigotry of films like Birth of a Nation or from the books written by revisionist southern historians. Dr. Franklin outlines the several stages of reconstruction: the initial confederate dominated governments that passed "black" laws that introduced de facto slavery, the reaction of congress and the passage of laws which helped install state governments that contained former slaves and northern "carpetbaggers", the southern reaction to this that was dominated by groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and finally the readmission and rehabilitation of the Southern states that led to the political marginalization of the former slaves. Along the way he discusses the almost impeachment of President Andrew Johnson and the disputed election of Rutherford B. Hays. I found this extremely interesting as he shows that the oft cited reason for the Southern Democratic support for the Republican Hays was not primarily because of a deal to remove Federal troops from the three states that had not yet been rehabilitated. The Democrat Tilden had promised to remove these troops. Dr. Franklin cites studies that show that the deal by which the Southern Democrats switched their votes to Hays was motivated primarily by a deal concerning federal support for southern railways.

It's appalling that previous reviewers have denigrated this classic work by one of our counry's most distinguished historians. Born in 1915, Franklin was subject to the ugly aftermath of Reconstruction and wrote many definitive works on African-American history and the history of race relations. He has won innumerable honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and has chaired the American Historical Society, Phi Beta Kappa, the American Studies Association, the Southern Historical Association, and the President's Commission on Race (1997). Reviews that accuse him of being a poor writer or offering nothing beyond a high school history text (which would not have been written without his pioneering scholarship) only display the ignorance of the reviewers. Read this book, and Franklin's others!

Prescription strength Self-care...

This is an excellent well thought out prescription for self-care; both re-habilitation and injury avoidance... I have been climbing for 25+ years and breath a sigh of relief when I make it to the end of a season without a new tweak... This book has already helped me find and start to address the root cause of a reoccurring issues rather than me simply treating the symptoms; releasing my triceps has almost eradicated my nagging elbow pain. Finding and working through knots in the muscle belly of my biceps has relieved the pain (strain) on my biceps tendon. I'm now working through a puffy/clicky finger that I've been guarding for the past 2 years... Many thanks for publishing the book and all the videos on-line.

Great book Helps with chronic elbow lateral epicondylitis. I think that it is not a cure all and you need to learn how to strengthen and train antagonistic muscles in order to prevent recurrences. This is in my opinion where the book may fall short. It may be a difficult read for some people
