Essential reading for future BCBAs!
By Jennifer Winchester
If you plan to work toward becoming a BCBA, you MUST get this book! It is essential that all BCBAs know and understand their ethical responsibilities and how to handle some of the ethical challenges that can come about in the course of practice. A bit thick, terminology-wise, but it is geared toward graduate-level students so that is to be expected.

very good and helpful book
By M.McDonough
As a masters student in Behavior Analysis, this book is very helpful, and required. It gave many scenarios that were easy to follow and helped clarify some confusion. Definitely worth getting, especially if you are considering sitting for the BACB exam, as there are ethics questions on that test.

The book was for school. It was an easy read. I enjoyed the real life scenarios to connect ethical content to real life. Only reason not 5 stars is that I would not have naturally chosen this book to read.

Very well done!
By David Quigley
Although I own the four individual paperbacks that comprise the majority of this single hardback edition, I am glad I spent the money on this anyway. The book is beautifully done. I can tell the editors put a lot of effort into getting the text and pictures in a useful order. The pictures are clearer as well as easier to follow and they match up nicely with the text. What I found most refreshing about this text, as opposed to many Jeet Kune Do books being released lately, is the fact that the whole BLEF vs. Inosanto feud is left out! This had to be done considering Dan Inosanto and Ted Wong appear in the book numerous times, but the fact that it isn't in the introduction by Shannon Lee is a nice touch. All-in-all, this book is well worth the money. It is more understandable and easier to follow than the more popular Tao of Jeet Kune Do and the new format is simply beautiful. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

Excellent Book!
By Richard
Excellent book by Bruce Lee that shows how to defend yourself in various "street" scenarios. The examples shown are basic and straightforward, allowing the reader and practitioner the ability to easily grasp the defensive actions shown. Although some of the examples are unusual (ie - defense against a staff), they are still effective and easy to master. Very good book for anyone at any age, men and women! Other books I'd recommend based on his fighting style would be the rest of this series, as well as "The Bruce Lee Library" series by John Little. The "Tao Of Jeet Kune Do" is also an excellent book that includes his own personal notes and thoughts about his fighting art.

Pygmalion (Penguin Classics), by George Bernard Shaw

Shaw's brilliantly witty exposure of the British class system

Shaw wrote the part of Eliza Doolittle—'an east-end dona with an apron and three orange and red ostrich feathers'—for Mrs Patrick Campbell, with whom he had a passionate but unconsummated affair. From the outset the play was a sensational success, although Shaw, irritated by its popularity at the expense of his artistic intentions, dismissed it as a potboiler. The Pygmalion of legend falls in love with his perfect female statue and persuades Venus to bring her to life so that he can marry her. But Shaw radically reworks Ovid's tale to give it a feminist slant: while Higgins teaches Eliza to speak and act like a duchess, she also asserts her independence, adamantly refusing to be his creation.

This Penguin Classics editionis the definitive text produced under the editorial supervision of Dan H. Laurence, with an illuminating introduction by Nicholas Grene, discussing the language and politics of the play. Included in this volume is Shaw’s preface, as well as his ‘sequel’ written for the first publication in 1916, to rebut public demand for a more conventionally romantic ending.

For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators.

Review
One of Shaw's best works, Pygmalion is a perceptive comedy of wit and wisdom about the spunky flower girl and her irascible speech professor. The flower girl Eliza Doolittle teaches the egotistical phonetics professor Henry Higgins that to be a lady means more than just learning to speak like one. The performance by the L.A. Theatre Works is technically flawless and a world-class performance of a theatrical classic. -- Midwest Book Review

The performance by the L.A. Theatre Works is technically flawless and a world-class performance of a theatrical classic. -- Midwest Book Review

From the Inside Flap
One of Shaw's most enduring works, Pygmalion is an insightful comedy of class relations and perceptions, as played out between a Cockney flower girl and the irascible speech professor who has taken her on as a pet project. Described by critics as "a play of great vitality and charm," Pygmalion inspired the award-winning stage and film productions of Lerner and Loewe's musical, My Fair Lady.

An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Roslyn Alexander, Shannon Cochran, Denise du Maurier, Rebecca MacLean, David New, Kenneth J. Northcott, Nicholas Pennell, Nicholas Rudall, Ben Whitehouse and Laura Whyte.

About the Author
Goerge Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was one of the most prolific writers of the modern theater. He invented the modern comedy of ideas, expounding on social and political problems with a razor-sharp tongue. He won the 1925 Nobel Prize for literature. Dan H. Laurence is series editor for the works of Shaw in Penguin. W. J. McCormack is professor of literary history at Goldsmith's College, London.

Nicholas Grene is Professor of English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin, a Senior Fellow of the College, a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge. He has published widely on Shakespeare, drama, and Irish literature, and his books include Bernard Shaw: A Critical View (1984), Shakespeare's Tragic Imagination (1992), The Politics of Irish Drama (Cambridge University Press, 1999) and Shakespeare's Serial History Plays (Cambridge University Press, 2002). Among his most recent books are Yeats's Poetic Codes (2008), the New Mermaids edition of Major Barbara (2008), Synge and Edwardian Ireland (co-edited with Brian Cliff, 2011), and a memoir Nothing Quite Like It: An American-Irish Childhood (2011). He has been invited to speak in over twenty countries and has been a visiting professor at the University of New South Wales, Dartmouth College and the University of Paris IV (Sorbonne).

WARNING....abridged version
By Marda S.
Although I love Pygmalion, this is an ABRIDGED version. Many scenes are not included, particularly at the end of each act. If you want an unabridged version, I would suggest the Penguin Classics edition.

The Evolution of Pygmalion
By christine
Pygmalion is a brilliant success by George Bernard Shaw to modernize the legendary Greek tale of a sculptor who falls in love with his artsitic creation and wishes to bring her to life. The rags-to-riches tale of Eliza Doolittle captivates the reader with its fast paced storyline, and witty dialogue. Shaw fascinates the reader with complicated characters such as Henry Higgins, Doolittle, and Colonel Pickering. Set in England, during a period of sophistication and elegance, Higgins and Pickering were faced with the seemingly impossible task of transforming a filthy flower girl (Eliza) into a beautiful duchess. The outrageous antics that ensue are both humorous and entertaining. Shaw's playful dialogue and timeless plot have been updated to fit the social and cultural standards of our time. For example, Alan Jay Lerner's My Fair Lady is an internationally acclaimed musical adaptation of Shaw's classic play. 1999 brought yet another adaptation of Pygmalion, in the form of the film She's All That, penned by R. Lee Fleming Jr. This teen comedy brings a new twist to the classic characters of Shaw's play. Pygmalion is a quick read and an enjoyable way to spend the day, and the characters in the story will remain with you forever.

Two-fer-one: the play and the musical
By Anne Salazar
This is a really nice edition since it has George Bernard Shaw's original text AND the script of Lerner and Loewe's musical adaptation, including the lyrics. I actually read the play in the Simon and Schuster paperback edition and followed each act by reading this book's My Fair Lady; the lyrics are a lot of fun to read, just as they were fun to hear in the movie or the soundtrack or on the stage.

While I was reading Pygmalion, Henry Higgins comes across as even more insufferable than the character as depicted by Rex Harrison. But Shaw was trying to make a point in his play -- actually, several points -- about the English language. For example, the Publisher's Note in this edition quotes Shaw in 1902 discussing what he emphatically states as the stupid, unnecessary use of apostrophes in such words as won't, can't, haven't, etc., and it strikes me that in today's abbreviated computer-speak (lol, omg, etc.) his desire is finally come to pass. Oh well, it only took a hundred years.

But the use of apostrophes is just one point made seriously but humorously in both play and musical, and you really need to read both to understand the full message about the use of language and "types" of people, including Eliza's father, not to mention the Conclusion to the play not widely known by the non-readers among us. I thought both the play and the musical were delightful and this is a wonderful edition because it includes the full text of both, but the Simon and Schuster edition has Shaw's complete Epilogue.

ambition, without greed, pays off
By Kurt
I got my copy of BE MY GUEST at an old book sale at the public library. It's a wonderful book, and I'm glad to hear that even in the late 1990s it was still being distributed at Hilton hotels. This book chronicles the business endeavors of Conrad N. Hilton from his aspirations to own his own bank in the pre-WWI years through his first hotels in Texas and New Mexico in the early '20s to his crowning glory--the purchase of the opulent Waldorf-Astoria hotel in NYC around 1950. What makes this book interesting and useful is the quality of the man, not the strength of his business empire. "Connie" Hilton is a man of honor and principle, but he has much ambition, too. His fortunes have been made through hard work, calculated risks, and his "people skills." Comparing Conrad "Connie" Hilton to someone like Donald "The Donald" Trump shows how our culture has become more cheap and frivilous in the two generations that separate these hotel/real estate giants. For another book with similar factual content but less wit, humor, and commentary on human nature, see Thomas Ewing Dabney's book, THE MAN WHO BOUGHT THE WALDORF (New York: Duell, Sloan, and Pearce;1950.)

Should be standard reading for entrepreneurial success; a timeless classic
By Craig Rowland
I picked up Be My Guest by Conrad Hilton when I stayed at the Milwaukee Hilton several years ago. Guests of Hilton hotels in addition to finding the standard free soap and shampoo also receive a complimentary copy of Hilton's memoir, originally written in 1957. I started reading Be My Guest while aboard S. A. Agulhas II en route from Cape Town, South Africa to Tristan da Cunha. I finished the book on board and while I wanted to leave it in the ship's library when I had finished it, the lack of Internet on board, both on my way to Tristan as well as coming back, precluded me from posting this review from the ship. Thus I have waited until my return to Cape Town to post this.

Be My Guest was an engaging story that I enjoyed reading each night. It was a can't-put-down book, wherein Hilton documented his family story, often with humorous anecdotes, from the courtship of his parents and his boyhood growing up in New Mexico to his founding of one of the greatest hotel chains worldwide.

Each of Hilton's parents instilled in him a guiding principle that he has followed all of his life. From his mother, Mary Laufersweiler Hilton, he learned the power of prayer and from his father Gus he learned the value of work. In addition to these principles Hilton added his own: that one must never be afraid to dream. And to dream big . And big is exactly how Conrad Hilton dreamt.

Hilton got his first taste of the hotel industry when a currency panic in October 1907 left his father nearly broke. His family soon realized that they had been literally sitting on a moneymaker:

"We had the biggest, ramblingest adobe house in New Mexico directly facing a railroad station on a main line. And we had my mother's cooking. This added up to only one thing--a Hilton Hotel."

Be My Guest had plenty of humorous moments and I can imagine Hilton himself laughing out loud as he recalled some moments from his childhood. I'll bet he had a good time writing (or dictating) his story. Having such a devoutly Catholic mother kept a young Connie always on his toes:

"Almost as much as going to church or playing hooky, I liked going down the road to talk with Charles Hislie, the carpenter, or Carl Jenks, the village blacksmith and dentist. Mr. Jenks shoed horses or pulled teeth, whichever service was required at the moment. My brother Carl, after an extraction, claimed that he used the same instruments for both operations, but I have no first-hand knowledge of that.
"As I seldom had a toothache I loved to hang around Mr. Jenks' emporium and smell the pungent hot smell and listen to the hammer ringing on the anvil. I also liked to hear Mr. Jenks cuss. He was very talented in that direction and to this day I believe he had as extensive a vocabulary as any man I ever met.
"This hero worship was rudely interrupted when an unsuitable word escaped my lips at dinner table. Mother was shocked. Gus paused in carving the roast only long enough to glare at me and say, 'You stay away from the smithy.' From that time I did, except on dental business when I was accompanied by my lady mother."

Mrs. Hilton also features in an amusing story after her son had made his fortune in the hotel business. She could not accustom herself to having others do for her what she had proudly always done herself:

"My mother, I might add, never did modernize her views on tipping. When she lived for some years at the El Paso Hilton, this was a source of some amusement and much conniving on the part of her children. I, myself, would take her twenty or thirty quarters with specific instructions that she was to give one or two to any bellboy, any waiter, anyone, indeed, who gave her special service, depending on the extra amount of trouble it gave him.

"'I'll try, Connie,' she'd say.
"And I would find out from my sister Helen that, as soon as my back was turned, she'd trot down to the cashier and have the quarters converted into dimes, with which she reluctantly rewarded any service she absolutely could not do herself. Ten cents remained all her life the most she could bring herself to tip."

Be My Guest traces Hilton's shift from buying banks to buying hotels. At first he took over older hotels and transformed them according to his vision. The Hilton empire of new hotels was not his immediate intention. Only after his frustration in having to renovate yet another older building did he consider starting to build his next hotel from the ground up.

It was however not a new hotel but the palatial Queen of all hotels, the Waldorf Astoria, that was his prime target for many years. Its prestige as the height of luxurious hotel accommodation and reputation for unparallelled service made it the diamond in the eye of the Big Apple. He dreamt of owning it one day, and this big dream of his would one day become true. Hilton wrote of his many offers and counteroffers, and offered his insights into the skills of negotiation and the honour in keeping your word with a handshake.

The Waldorf Astoria may be the Queen of his "dowager" hotels, yet he still had to revitalize it to meet Hilton standards. However even when confronted with a rather unfortunate reality of hotel ownership, Hilton can still elicit a smile:

"A wire from Carl at the Waldorf pinpointed this vague feeling. 'Fellow in 202 bumped himself off last night. After looking at his room I don't blame him. We have got to fix up those rooms.'
"I somehow doubted that the dcor in 202 had driven the poor fellow to suicide. Unfortunately tired people, discouraged people have sought the impersonal solitude of a hotel for their unhappy business since time immemorial."

One of the pleasures of reading Be My Guest were its stories away from the wheeling and dealing and cornerstone laying. I was absorbed not only in the stories of Hilton's boyhood but also in the tales about his wives and children. Hilton's second marriage was to Zsa Zsa Gabor which in retrospect he could see "was doomed before it started". He recounted with heaving exasperation the countless times he tried to curb her spending habits:

"Glamour, I found, is expensive, and Zsa Zsa was glamour raised to the last degree. She also knew more days on which gifts could be given than appear on any holiday calendar. And then, of course, you could always give gifts because it was no special day at all and thereby transform it."

and:

"I have tried to instill sound business principles into my beautiful Circe, but I might as well have practiced on a statue in the park."

Be My Guest , being that it was published in 1957 at the end of the communist red scare of McCarthyism, ends its final chapters with Hilton vowing to fight communism. The anti-communist tone seems like a time warp of a read for today's reader, yet at the time the red menace was seen as a legitimate threat and proud Americans showed their patriotism by publicly fighting against it. To Hilton, his hotels bridged cultures by bringing the peoples of the world together as a united front against communism.

Hilton ends his book by listing his ten ingredients for successful living. His words of wisdom may help others realize their dreams. Herewith are the Hilton top ten:

Find your own particular talent.
Be big.
Be honest.
Live with enthusiasm.
Don't let your possessions possess you.
Don't worry about your problems.
Don't cling to the past.
Look up to people when you can--down to no one.
Assume your full share of responsibility for the world in which you live.
Play consistently and confidently.

Old 'classic' book, a very nice read..
By Mista R O'Regan
Hi guys,
I read this book because Dan Kennedy mentioned it in one of his marketing books..

It is a rags to riches story about Conrad Hilton, the guy who started Hilton hotels as we know it.
(This is before the days of Paris Hilton, Conrad was not born into money & fame!)

I was expecting to learn about entrepreneurial skills.. which I did a little, but I got more out of this book than I was expecting.. I got a cultural history lesson and an ethics lesson !

It was written in 1957 and covered Conrad's life in older times still, he talks about his parents, before the 1st world war.. What was lovely, was I got an insight into the old days, how people lived.. before technology as we know it today.. and before some cities were even built..

I never realised that hotels in the past didn't have room service, or getting a pickup from the station by taxi, 100 years ago, was unheard of.. stuff we take for granted now, but at one point didn't exist..

I feel I gained a renewed sense of ethics that may well help me in my own ventures in the future.. I'm not a Christian, and Connie does go on about the Christian 'God' alot.. occasionally too much, but never enough to really bother me, I understood where he was coming from, and was interesting to see how his faith helped him..

The first chapter, I found hard and boring to read, fortunately shortly after, I started getting into this book, and am really glad I read it.

There are as you can expect, a number of little pears of wisdom scattered throughout this book, and Im sure each reader will find their own nuggets.
It's not a big book.. 280+ pages, and a very nice little read.. Worth it in my opinion.
Have fun

Suffering and the Heart of God: How Trauma Destroys and Christ Restores, by Diane Langberg

Do Trauma and Abuse Have the Last Word?

When someone suffers through trauma, can healing happen? And, if yes, how does it happen? Dr. Diane Langberg tackles these complex and difficult questions with the insights she has gained through more than forty years of counseling those whose lives have been destroyed by trauma and abuse. Her answer carefully explained in Suffering and the Heart of God is Yes, what trauma destroys, Christ can and does restore.

But it s not a fast process, instead much patience is required from family, friends, and counselors as they wisely and respectfully help victims unpack their traumatic suffering through talking, tears, and time. And it s not a process that can be separated from the work of God in both a counselor and counselee. Dr. Langberg calls all of those who wish to help sufferers to model Jesus s sacrificial love and care in how they listen, love, and guide. The heart of God is revealed to sufferers as they grow to understand the cross of Christ and how their God came to this earth and experienced such severe suffering that he too is well-acquainted with grief. The cross of Christ is the lens that transforms and redeems traumatic suffering and its aftermath, not only for the sufferer, but it also transforms those who walk with the suffering. This book will be a great help to anyone who loves, listens to, and seeks to help someone impacted by trauma and abuse. There is no quick fix, but there is the hope for healing through the love of God in Christ.

Review
“In a poetic, powerful, passionate, and challenging book, Diane Langberg, with her many years of counseling experience, takes us on a disturbing (and healing) journey into the hearts of the survivors of many different types of terrible trauma all over the world—into our own bent and broken hearts, and then into the heart of an amazing, loving God who was humiliated, crucified, and abandoned so that we (and the whole creation) might be healed and delivered from the power of evil. This is a superb master-class in counseling and pastoral care with a gifted, experienced, and wise therapist.”
Richard Winter, MD, Therapist and Professor of Practical Theology and Counseling, Covenant Theological Seminary

“Through this book, Dr. Langberg names one of the most insidious threats to spiritual health in our generation: trauma and the wounded heart. While disturbing, her unrelenting campaign identifies the next
‘mission field’ of the church, those who are suffering silently. This book is for all who hunger to help a loved one, congregant, or client apply the truth of God’s Word as a healing ointment to the hidden anguish that trauma leaves in its wake.”
Roy Peterson, President, American Bible Society

“This book reflects the glory and love of God throughout forty years of counseling experience. Diane is a masterful teacher and counselor for victims of abuse and violence. Reflecting Christ, she inspires new and experienced counselors and encourages them to bring the love of God to suffering hearts. This book is a masterpiece.”
Luciene Schalm, President of REVER (Restoring Lives, Equipping Restorers) Ministry, Brazil; missionary of Comunidade Crist Silo

“We live in a broken world and evil is real. Where the true light of the gospel of Christ goes, the darkness of evil in this world retreats. William Wilberforce reflected the character of Christ into the eighteenth century British Empire and faithfully led the fight against slavery for forty years until it was outlawed. Diane Langberg has for forty years looked into the eyes of those wounded by evil and been a powerful voice for healing, justice, and truth. This book is a place of insight, wisdom, encouragement, and challenge for the body of Christ to love our precious Lord and to reflect his heart and love to the brokenhearted.”
Greg Pritchard, PhD, Director of European Leadership Forum, President of Forum of Christian Leaders

“Diane Langberg has seen the effects of trauma all over the globe from Rwandan survivors of genocide, to inner city kids plagued with PTSD, to suburban moms trapped in violent marriages, to middle schoolers who cut themselves just to feel something, to big steeple pastors in American churches. Suffering is real and it really hurts body and soul. In Suffering and the Heart of God, Diane Langberg never diminishes the pain of suffering, but neither does she despair. By looking to the suffering of the cross of Christ, Diane Langberg leads us to hope and healing.”
Frank A. James, PhD, DPhil, President, Biblical Theological Seminary

“This book is a powerful invitation into the fellowship of the suffering, a reparative work of the vulnerable, afflicted, and abused. Dr. Langberg is gentle and caring to the victims, confrontational to the abusers, and challenging to the church, which often fails to be a refuge. As a therapist and trainer, this is the best manual I’ve seen on what a therapist’s heart should look like. A good portion of the book is dedicated to teaching how not to be consumed by the evil in this world, pointing to Christ who can offer restoration to all.”
Stefana-Ioana Racorean, Family psychotherapist and trainer, Dianoia Institute of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice; The Association of Christian Psychologists in Romania

“As someone who has prosecuted, investigated, and confronted child sexual abuse for over twenty years, I have encountered dark suffering up close. As a Christian, I have spent many hours agonizing how to reconcile such suffering with a God who calls himself “love.” Suffering and the Heart of God is an amazing book that does a masterful job in helping to see suffering through the heart of a loving God who knows and understands suffering and the pain it creates. This book brings hope to the sufferer who wonders where God is in the midst of it all. It’s a must-read!”
Boz Tchividjian, JD, Executive Director, GRACE (Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment)

“I challenge you to name a more influential Christian psychologist today than Dr. Langberg. This is not hyperbole! While an impressive communicator, brilliant thinker, and an astute therapist, the real reason for her influence is her willingness to be a student first—of broken people, of herself, and of God. Too often influential leaders spend much time touting themselves. This book will show you something different, in that you will see more of God and his heart for suffering people than you will of Dr. Langberg—just as she would want it.”
Philip G. Monroe, PsyD, Professor of Counseling & Psychology, Biblical Seminary Graduate School of Counseling and Global Trauma Recovery Institute

“God never wastes a wound. He is in the midst of our darkest moment revealing himself—full of love, truth, hope, and healing. This book is an absolute treasure—a gift of grace to us all.”
Tim Clinton, President, American Association of Christian Counseling

“Diane Langberg brings to these moving essays decades of experience working with trauma survivors in the United States and abroad. This is no arms-length reflection on the nature of human suffering. Throughout, she repeatedly points her readers to Jesus Christ, the Suffering Servant, who is the only hope for victim and perpetrator alike—and for the counselor who desires to be used by God to make a difference amidst terrible brokenness and sin.”
Michael R. Emlet, MDiv, MD, Faculty and Counselor, the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF); author of CrossTalk: Where Life and Scripture Meet

“Do not read this book unless you are genuinely open to being led by the Holy Spirit to become more involved in ministering ‘to the least of these’ in Christ’s name. Dr. Langberg has written a powerful and thorough summary of the complex reality of trauma in our world today. She has described Christ’s Gethsemane weeping and his Calvary caring for those who are wounded and needy, and she calls us to weep and to watch and to care with him. She challenges us—Will we weep and watch and care, or will we sleep?”
Dr. Samuel Logan, Associate International Director, The World Reformed Fellowship

“As a Rwandan who lived through genocide, experienced my own trauma, and witnessed trauma for my people and my clients, I know firsthand the truth of what Diane teaches in this book. Until you understand the psychology of evil, sin, and suffering, many things will remain hidden and unanswered, but Christ can transform lives affected by emotional trauma into instruments to restore life and turn victim into victor. Thank you, Diane, for addressing this difficult and often hidden topic.”
Baraka Paulette Uwingeneye, President, Rwandan Association of Christian Counselors; Director of Aftercare, International Justice Mission, Rwanda

“Diane drops insightful one-liners like others drop names. I remember the first time I heard her describe trauma as the ‘mission field of the twenty-first century.’ Suddenly, everything we were grappling with in the field made sense. A thousand lightbulbs went off. Synapses clicked. That one sentence opened up a new direction in my personal life and vocation. Read at your own risk because there’s no going back to the way life was before.”
John Walter, President, African Leadership; cofounder of The Trauma Healing Institute

“When I get the chance to listen to or read Diane Langberg’s work, I take it. Of the five greatest talks I’ve heard in my sixty-eight years, she gave two of them. Her writing inspires. She is as tough-minded as people come, never underestimating the horrors of life. But walking with her through those horrors inspires me with hope. Because Diane walks with Jesus, and where Jesus is, there is hope. Suffering and the Heart of God: How Trauma Destroys and Christ Restores will turn your heart more fully to God in the midst of the evils and mundane cares of the world that you face. Please read it.”
Everett L. Worthington, Jr., Author of Moving Forward: Six Steps to Forgiving Yourself and Breaking Free from the Past

“Stepping into the trenches with those whose lives have been blown apart by the heinous business of human trafficking means you’re battling alongside them on many fronts: past, present, and future. The terrain is dark and hostile, and the Enemy seems to have won. But, as Langberg artfully reminds us, we are but chaplains in this war. The battle is the Lord’s and the victory is certain. Be of good courage and press on!”
Jeanne L. Allert, MEd, Founder and Executive Director, The Samaritan Women

Helpful Understanding of the Destructive Effects of Trauma and How the Gospel Heals

“As the people of God we have been called in any ways to serve as the rescue workers of this world. We are invited into the fellowship of the sufferings of Christ. That means we are called into the place of darkness and death because that is where he went.”

In .41 second Google will bring up over 201 million search results for the word suffering. At every moment of the day there are thousands and thousands of people suffering all around the world. While one person is experiencing a high moment in their life there are thousands of others experiencing deep and painful suffering at the same time.

We cannot avoid suffering in our own lives. Pretending, as some religions teach, that is does not exist is no help. In a world full of sin it is only a matter of time before a person experiences suffering. When we do experience it we need ways to deal with it from people who are capable of helping us.

Bringing understanding about and the healing only Christ can offer to victims of suffering and trauma Diane Langberg has written Suffering and the Heart of God: How Trauma Destroys and Christ Restores (New Growth Press, 2015). Langberg has counseled trauma victims the world over for over forty years and works with a team of experienced counselors across numerous fields to help hurting people.

There are three reasons why Langberg’s book is a must read for all professional and church counselors. First, Langberg’s forty years of trauma counseling gives her a unique perspective and vast amounts of knowledge, wisdom and skill in working with trauma victims. Her experience with a variety of trauma situations has given her a picture of the evil that suffering brings into peoples lives. From dealing with domestic abuse in the US to helping the victims of the Rwanda genocide, she has an authority like very few others in her field.

As a result of her vast experiences, Langberg is able to present the reader with a picture of the suffering in trauma from a multitude of angels. Langberg covers everything from the psychology of suffering, the spiritual effects of suffering, living day to day with suffering, grief, the church and abuse, domestic violence, and even the role shame plays in trauma. This books is a chance to sit at the foot of a uniquely qualified counselor.

The second reason this book is so good is because of Langberg’s ability to apply the gospel to victims of trauma. Central to the hope she offers in her counseling is the reality and power of the resurrection of Christ. The suffering that trauma can take people into the pits of despair. It can take them to the grave. Jesus went to the grave Himself because of and for our sin and the sin of others. He rose out of the grave to new life and that resurrection life is available to us; to those who are suffering and experiencing trauma. When all seems lost as a result of our suffering we can be found in Christ because of His suffering.

The final reason this book is a must read is because Langberg of the challenge it is to those who are counseling victims of trauma. The primary reason, she argues, that we avoid dealing with suffering is because of our own egocentrism. Not only do we want to avoid experiencing suffering in our own lives but we want to avoid it in the lives of others. We don’t want to touch the suffering of others or be touched by it. We want to distance ourselves from the sin that causes the suffering in the lives of others but in doing so we forget that it effects us as well. Langberg writes

"We are not healthy doctors working with sickness. We are sick doctors who are trying to grasp the nature and impact of a life-threatening disease that has invaded our own souls, minds, and hearts. Whatever this disease has done to our so-called patients, it has done or can do to us." (30)

Christ was not egocentric when it came to the suffering of humanity. The Son of God emptied Himself of the position He had at the right hand of the Father and took on human sinful flesh in order to redeem us from its weaknesses that our sin brought on in order to bring us back to the Father with Him. This is how we are to follow Christ when it comes to helping others with their suffering. We walk and live among the dead because that is what Jesus did for us. We offer the hope of the resurrection to the dead because that is Jesus did for us. We realize that as ministers of this resurrection hope we are as much in need of it as those to whom we offer it to in the name of Christ.

Suffering and the Heart of God is an amazing book that will give readers much to chew on with regard to suffering, its victims, and the hope of the gospel. Part of the power of her approach is that she is not writing from a merely academic perspective. This is not a clinical textbook with pat and stock observations and answers. This is a book borne out of lived experience with suffering in her own life and the life of others.

This is a book that proclaims the superior healing power of the gospel over the power suffering can have in our lives.

Gritty, Theological, Convicting!
By Matt
I am deeply grateful to New Growth Press for furnishing a copy for this review. This offering by Diane Langberg is a profound assessment of God’s redemptive working in the hearts and lives of sufferers, and in particular, of trauma victims. In it, Dr. Langberg distills her impressive resume and experience into a thoughtful and helpful book that belongs on every counselor’s bookshelf. Langberg integrates a beautiful Christian orthodoxy, a vast knowledge of the counseling world, and an adept capacity for storytelling into a helpful whole. This book reads at times like a prophet, at times like well-written case studies, and at times like Christology. Reading this book seriously will force you onto your knees in prayer and into the lives of the broken. I took several months to read this book, in part, because I saw my own need to absorb it well.

Let me put it plainly: If you minister in any capacity, you cannot afford to not read this book.

Highly recommend. One of the best books I have read.
By L. Forman
Written for professional counselors. I am not one but have friends who have gone through trauma. This book is written in a way that a lay person can easily follow. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be effective in helping those who have suffered trauma due to death, war, disease, abuse, weather events, genocide, etc.

Expressive Anatomy for Comics and Narrative: Principles and Practices from the Legendary Cartoonist (Will Eisner Library (Hardcover))By

The final volume of Will Eisner’s celebrated instructional trilogy explores the critical principle of body grammar in comics storytelling.

Designed and outlined by Will Eisner before his death in 2005, this posthumous masterwork, the third and final book in the Will Eisner Instructional Series, finally reveals the secrets of Eisner’s own techniques and theories of movement, body mechanics, facial expressions, and posture: the key components of graphic storytelling. From his earliest comics, including the celebrated Spirit, to his pioneering graphic novels, Eisner understood that the proper use of anatomy is crucial to effective storytelling. His control over the mechanical and intuitive skills necessary for its application set him apart among comics artists, and his principles of body grammar have proven invaluable to legions of students in overcoming what is perhaps the most challenging aspect of creating comics. Buttressed by dozens of illustrations, which display Eisner’s mastery of expression, both subtle and overt, Expressive Anatomy for Comics and Narrative will benefit comics fans, students, and teachers and is destined to become the essential primer on the craft.

Start creating believable characters immediately
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:29714511]]Expressive Anatomy for Comics and Narrative is one of the three Will Eisner instructional books. The other two are Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative and Comics and Sequential Art.

I bought the book to learn how to pose characters properly and create strong silhouettes. I'm glad to say that this book provides tons of examples selected from Will Eisner's years of comics.

Will Eisner started the book but unfortunately passed away in 2005 before he could finish it. Enter Peter Poplaski, an artist who have worked long time beside him. Peter Poplaski was engaged to add the finishing touches for the book with some additional drawings. The majority of art work is still from Will Eisner's archive.

The first few chapters explain the anatomy and how it affects movement. It offers a basic introduction to the latter chapters and is definitely not a substitute for an anatomy book.

The core concept of the book is actually this: human actions come from reflex and emotions.

The bulk of the book is devoted to showing examples of how certain feelings are express through body language and gesture. Each example is clearly explained and exceptionally easy to understand. Even if speech balloons are taken away from the example comic panels, readers will still know how the characters are feeling. Such is the power of a strong silhouette.

Included are also many other techniques to help breath life into characters, such as staging, composition, positioning of characters etc.

This book is very useful for any artists who wants to create believable characters people can relate to.

I think I'll also be getting the other two books.

Yet another useful set of instructions and attitudes from Will Eisner. For story-telling artists, this goes with the other Eisner books. Everything here can be applied to today's static and sequential art.

Will Eisner's books are a must have for anyone interested in animation. I was classically trained in college of fine arts. I must say I love learning new techniques and these books do not disipoint.

The Ivory Tablets of the Crow:: A Translation of the Dup Shimati, by Warlock Asylum

The Ivory Tablets of the Crow is the initiatory rite of the Art of Ninzuwu, a spiritual practice said to have originated during the Jomon period, closely associated with the Tengu, Yatagarasu, and Ryujin Shinko (Dragon god faith). During the Jomon period an empire existed, whose boundaries stretched from the Far East into what is known today as ancient Mesopotamia. Traces of this empire can be found in the legends of the continent of Mu and stories about a struggle for what is known as the Tablets of Destinies, which marked the breakdown of this kingdom. The Tablets of Destinies was understood to be “the power of Anu” by the ancient Mesopotamians. It is said by some to be the Yi Jing of Chinese, and an esoteric knowledge of a secret society that was occasionally revealed to mankind by the Tengu and the Yatagarasu. The Ninzuwu, being the keepers of the sacred knowledge, shared this technology with mankind in the mathematical language of dreams and other practices that are closely associated with what is known today as Shinto and Yi Jing Sorcery, which are not separate schools when understood properly, the Cult of Nyarzir. It was by the use of the mathematical language of dreams, that an initiate can interpret and communicate with the same forces that he/she are being influenced by, and what deity that they may call upon for clarity, but also how transmute their own DNA and evolve in being. This is the meaning of the Tablets of Destinies, also known as the Yi Jing.

A New Classic Text of the Fourth Way
By Arcane Obscure
There are many metaphors that are employed in metaphysical texts, and this work is no exception. Such metaphors are easily misunderstood by those that do not understand the purpose of the work. It's very easy for those who are asleep to misinterpret and misunderstand the purpose of Myth. It's something of a paradox, those that understand the least are those that would most benefit from this work, and yet, are the very same people that will never make the attempt! If you are willing to do the work, you will find many doors suddenly open to many wondrous things. If you feel drawn to this way, I highly recommend seeking out The Esoteric Black Dragon Society. Their members are extremely knowledgeable, and will be happy to assist the sincere seeker. I personally have used this text to great effect with their guidance. It has changed my outlook and attitudes on many things. Most of all, it has enabled me to be more myself, and to become more open to happiness and joy. Many blessings to you, and thank you for reading this review. I hope it will be of some use to those that seek to walk the Way!

Very unique read
By Digital Godhi
This is a work that i feel will be an important addition to any collection of High Magick. To the neophyte magician interested in experimenting with the "mysteries". I advise them to be ever so cautious in pursuing the knowledge within. Regardless of the readers interpretation of the book, the price to purchase is more than worth the cost. To fully appreciate the contents within; natural magickal systems will almost certainly prove innefective in calibrating the psychosomatic complex. It is this readers belief that High Magick as in the Golden dawn, and the Necronomicon tradition will help. Knowledge is Power.

Beyond the usual dualism in Magick.
By Rafael Martin Barrio
This book goes beyond prehistoric Sumeria. It is a priceless item for those working with ancient Mesopotamian mysticism, or the Necronomicon Tradition. The approach embodied in The Ivory Tablets is both ancient and practical simultaneously. This manuscript is about Unity. There are few grimoires, or mystical texts, that manage to go beyond the usual dualism. It should noted that it can be dangerous for the uninitiated if not followed correctly. Hopefully, the curious and insincere will not receive any effect from it. The reading is inspiring, and the attentive reader can gain a lot of knowledge on his path in the prehistoric Sumerian studies.
