History, romance and magnificent horses…sigh!

I opened this book and from the first page was transported to the New South Wales Hunter Valley in the mid nineteenth century. If you are a lover of horses and have experienced the magic of the Melbourne Cup, this is a world you’ll want to be lost in. This is the story of India Kilhampton - a strong, independent woman who has been given one year to turn the failing family property into a thriving horse stud. Her dream is to breed a Melbourne Cup winner. When she advertises for a horse breeder, and Jim Mawgan presents himself for work, she is faced with the answer to all her dreams and the destruction of everything she knows. The tangled web of intrigue that Mawgan begins to unravel with his presence turns India’s world upside down and sends her heart spinning out of control.

I love that this author’s historical stories are all set in and around where she lives. It brings the books to life. Tea Cooper’s descriptions of the area are so vivid, I find I am no longer a reader holding a book, but I’m walking the property, Helligen, with her, picturing the buildings, smelling the leather and seeing the glossy coats of the horses. Her visceral description of the magnificent thoroughbred, Jefferson, made him linger in my mind long after I closed the book. The author’s secondary characters were powerful and complex, adding humour, mystery and authenticity to the story and balance to the protagonists. And Jim Mawgan was the consummate hero – strong, defiant, loyal but also flawed enough to be believable and, of course, extremely desirable. Loved this book!

An intriguing read that had a hornets nest of activity between the Kilhampton/Cobb families set on the Helligen farm. India and Jim carried the story well and the many secondary cast of characters add their dimension to what shaped up to be an enjoyable read, with the evident attraction between India and Jim and the tale surrounding both families. The descriptives of Jefferson were awesome and his part in the story was a highlight :) Jim and India's boundless attraction was oftentimes sweet and portrayed well and formed a perfect picture for this reader. Lots of emotional elements throughout the read that this reader relished. Author T�a Cooper writes such stunning characters in many of her novels and The Horse Thief held its own for a potent read. Strong characters, a stunning backdrop and fabulous story combined for a great read.

A beautiful and interesting story

India wants to bring her family's country home back to its former glory. Helligen Stud used to be so active and vibrant and India misses those days. To make her wish come true she has to show her father she's capable of running the estate and he's given her a deadline. She wants their horses to matter again and to achieve that she plans to win the Melbourne Cup. To be able to do that she needs a capable stable master. When Jim applies for the job it's like a dream come true, India's wishes might be fulfilled. Only Jim is carrying a secret, one that has everything to do with the troubled past of both of their families. When things go horribly wrong will they be able to save the situation and each other?

The Horse Thief is an amazing book about a beautiful home that has a sad history. Even though Jim and India don't know exactly what happened in the past they have to deal with the consequences of the problems between their parents. I loved the theme and the way Tea Cooper handles the secret, giving up a little bit every time. I also really liked the setting, which is amazing. I'm a big fan of books about animals and The Horse Thief doesn't disappoint in that area. The descriptions of the horses are fantastic and I enjoyed reading about their characters.

The romantic part of the story is very good. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to India. Her sister is a spoiled brat and she tries to make India marry an older man in the city so she can have her lifestyle and status back. This leads to a lot of friction, which I found really interesting. The cover of The Horse Thief is as beautiful as the story. I liked it a lot. It was fun to read about the past, to discover how people used to live back then. The connection between India and Jim is great. There are a lot of spectacular moments and I loved the ending. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

I have read the book through once, & I am about to start reading it for the second time. It is absolutely an AMAZING book.
This is Mabels best book ever. Each chapter you read, you can fee.e.e.e.l your heart saying YES.S. & understanding the truths at a deep level. It has blown me away. I will write another review when I can wrap my mind around what Mabel is trying her hardest to get through to us all. We need to think, & feel more with our heart's & keep our intellect & mind out of the way. Yes the cleaning is difficult to do all of the time. I find If I read at least one chapter a day it helps to keep me focused on doing the cleaning. I highly recommend it!!

Love this book

I just recently "found" Ho oponopono and wanted to learn more about it. I bought 3 books on it. This one, "The Sovereignity of Love" and Zero Limits". Both this book and "The Sovereignity of Love" are fantastic. Both are quick reads with a big impact. I have been putting this into practice in my life and am noticing a difference in both how I feel and how I interact with others as well as how they respond to me. It truly is "easy". I have always known that our outer world is merely a reflection of our inner world. This is a wonderful, uplifting way to clean up your inner world. I realize that it may seem too easy and that change requires a lot of hard work but I am firm believer that letting go is the key. This book shows you how to do that. I highly recommend it

Mabel has a gentle and respectful way of writing. You are not pounded with absolutes but gently reminded of something you forgot as part of your daily self care. This is the second book I've read and I can't wait for her next book.

An Undistinguished Portrait

Michelle Vogel's long-awaited book about the life of Gene Tierney is a monumental disappointment, both as a biography and as a reference guide to the actress' distinguished forty-year career on stage, screen, radio, and television. In terms of recounting the story of Tierney's turbulent life, there's very little new material here for readers familiar with the existing Tierney literature, and unfortunately, the author offers few fresh insights into the actress' personality. Most of the book simply recounts events and conversations already covered in Tierney's 1979 autobiography; a perusal of the Bibliography also discloses that the author included many old movie fan magazine articles among her sources.

Factually, the book is riddled with errors in terms of dates and chronology. For example, throughout the text, Vogel refers to award years according to the dates the ceremonies were held rather than the period for which work is being honored. Thus, Vogel states: "Gene lost the 1946 Academy Award for Best Actress to Joan Crawford ..." when in truth, Tierney lost the 1945 Academy Award for Best Actress to Crawford at the ceremony held on March 7, 1946. Similar discrepancies appear throughout the text. A more serious gaffe appears in a photo caption (and is repeated in the filmography) where it falsely states that "Hudson's Bay" was filmed before "The Return of Frank James"; curiously, this error is (correctly) contradicted within the text. Conversely, Vogel fails to mention or explain why "Dragonwyck" (filmed February - May 1945) was pulled from its scheduled September 1945 release date (after having been favorably reviewed by the press) and was shelved by 20th Century-Fox until Easter 1946; and she completely omits any mention within the text of Tierney's appearance on an episode of "G. E. Theatre", which served as the actress' 1960 comeback vehicle after years of treatment for mental illness.

While the photographs in the book are adequately reproduced, many of them - including the bulk of the film scene stills - will already be familiar to dedicated Tierney fans, and do not justify the book's high suggested retail price. Nor does the filmography serve as an adequate selling point; it is filled with errors and required more careful proofreading prior to publication (release and premiere dates are frequently incorrect; top-billed Jean Simmons and Victor Mature have been dropped from the cast listing for "The Egyptian"; cast and production credits for Tierney's television appearances are not included, etc., etc.). Overall, this book is regrettably not recommended. Gene Tierney and her legion of fans deserve much better than what is offered here.

Melodramatic and Error-prone

After having carefully combed through this book, I am very disappointed with my purchase. I've read Gene Tierney's autobiography 5 or 6 times, and kept referring back to it as I read this new biography. Michelle Vogel repeats many specific passages from Tierney's book: for example, both authors conclude the story of Gene's acting being complimented by Noel Coward with a reference to the actress' Aunt Lelia thwarted theatrical ambitions ("If only Lelia could see me now!"). And Vogel recounts quotes made by Tierney differently than did the actress herself: for example, Tierney says she answered John F. Kennedy's question about the end of their romance being final by saying simply "It is," while Vogel writes that Tierney repeated the phrase, declaring "It is. It is." It's this kind of soap operatic invention that makes Vogel's reporting both suspect and overly melodramatic.

About half of the much-lauded photos in the book were familiar to me from other publications. The most interesting of the photographs are the personal and candid shots. I had hoped to find a photo of Tierney and Kennedy together, but none was included. The extensive filmography in the back of the book is full of errors and typos: the names of actors and their characters are frequently incorrect. (Dana Andrews played Thomas Crail in BELLE STARR; that's John Shepperd in RINGS ON HER FINGERS; the portrait of Gene in LAURA does indeed appear in the final cut of ON THE RIVIERA; THAT WONDERFUL URGE is based on the 1937 Tyrone Power vehicle LOVE IS NEWS; the top-billed cast members in the listing for THE EGYPTIAN are missing; etc. etc.) Most perturbing of all is the mangling of dates concerning the films were released and awards were given out.

Overall, this was a far cry from the definitive biography of Miss Tierney that I had expected when I bought it. Those looking for a scholarly reference-quality volume will not find it here. Those who are less exacting about accuracy and fond of florid sentimentality may be more appreciative of this pricey tome.

Good Pictures, But Largely Superficial and Disappointing

The strengths of the book are the pictures of Gene Tierney and the filmography in the back with some interesting tidbits. However, the book is largely superficial, and contains relatively little information beyond that included in Ms. Tierney's autobiography published in 1979.

One of the major disappointments is that beyond her former husband, and a few people in Houston where Gene settled in retirement, the author apparently conducted very few, if any, interviews of people who worked with and knew Ms. Tierney. Yet there are many actors, actresses and other film professionals living today who worked with and knew Ms. Tierney. They could have shed a lot more insight on what Gene was really like, as well as her acting ability and style.

The book, in general, lacks much, if any, analysis of Gene's acting talent and style or the qulaity of her films. There were many themes that could have been pursued, such as why the quality of her roles declined sharply after 1948, as well as her relationships with her co-stars, but in general, this was not done. There was also relatively little about her life after 1960, beyond what was already included in the 1979 autobiography. (Ms. Tierney died in 1991.) In addition, the author did not include notes on sources of information, as would be expected in a more thorough book.

As someone who was eagerly awaiting the publication of this book, I was disappointed. There's just not much depth in the book. Without the filmography and the index, the book is less than 200 pages.

well written and easy to read

As a long time practitioner of Derobio Escrima spanning 22 years now, I found this book to be highly informative, well written and easy to read. This is the first time that the arts of Leyte have been written about and revealed in this medium, as well as the first time that a book has been written about one of the pioneers of FMA martial arts Great Grandmaster Brauilo Tomada Pedoy who was first featured in Guro Dan Inosanto's long out of print book called "The Filipino Martial Arts.

For years only a handful of individuals have known anything about this art beyond just the name. The information shown here is simple enough for the beginner to apply and also applicable enough for the seasoned practitioner to appreciate about an old school yet still highly effective art form. What I liked the most about this book was to see the lives of the men who pioneered this in the Philippines documented and to hear of the humanity that was placed at the forefront by these masters in their lives. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the Filipino martial arts and their particular evolution from the Philippines, Hawaii, and here in the mainland USA.

Great book for all FMA practioners and martial artists.

A well thought out and well organized book, GM Medina leads the reader through the history, concepts and techniques of Derobio Escrima The reader is led in step by step form through the use of photos though the angles of attack, defensive methods and drills as well as the empty hand techniques and counter locks. One of the interesting aspects of this form of escrima is the use of energy and flow. Highly recommended, an enjoyable read and great learning tool.

a waste of money it was

If you are looking for a book that will tell you how to fight Derobio Escrima then this book is not for you. The pictures are confusing and most of the reading talks about stories with the Grand masters who teaches is, instead of focusing on the fighting style it self. I am filipino and i practice this style of fighting from age 6-12 years of age. Im trying to re learn and remember my ways again but this book did not help me what so ever. a waste of money it was. But if u wanna know the story of some of the grand masters then this is the book for u. Other wise take a class instead or go to youtube.
