Great adaptation

This is one of my favorite stories of all time. I tried to read the original to my infant but it was a bit too long and the size of the book was cumbersome.

I was so excited to find this adaptation. It is a great interpretation of the story - nice idea and well executed. They shortened the prose and added interactive items on each page to engage little ones. It was also a huge hit with my 3 year old nephew.

This book has a great message inside all the wonderful Dr. Suess rhymes. It's a message about snobbery, inadequacy, and conformity and the silliness of all that. I love it.

Love the story but . . .

The Sneetches has always been one of my favorite Dr. Seuss tales. These days you could say it's about diversity and inclusion and even Economics 101. But I can't figure out why they decided to relocate the same story to a beach setting and make in mildly interactive. The age group that likes to push balls and flip inserts is probably too young for the story line. The grandfather of the almost-three-year-old I gave it to liked it better than the kid. I'm afraid the same will hold true when I give it to my granddaughter who is 3. She might like to listen to me read the sing-songy verse, but the interactive features are somewhat simplistic for a child who already has scores of pop-up and interactive books. We'll see!

A Great Commentary to Understand These Books.

This book is for the Bible Believing Christian. It is very well written and is easy to understand. It will help you build your faith in the Bible. It gives you a good understanding of the Corinthian church and why the epistle was written.

"The practical Christian life"

Part 1-1Corinthians:
This may be a slog for a "Tongue Talking" Christian to bear, because I'm reading this commentary, esp. 1Corinthians, from a viewpoint that doesn't particularly believe in tongues for today. So some may back off this one! It's a typical argument concerning the Apostolic gifts by the likes of John MacArthur et al. However, "Cessationist" theology aside, I "rejoice in the teaching of the word of God," and Ruckman does say, "so all spiritual gifts must be exercised with charity." And, I say, no one has to exercise his gifts as in "I'm practising my tongues"--Romans 11:29 states, "For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance"--they're irrevocable!

I take the liberty to state that Ruckman, even as Paul too, according to the wisdom given unto him has written primarily to the church; as too in all his Commentaries, speaking in them of these things; IN WHICH ARE SOME THINGS HARD TO BE UNDERSTOOD (my paraphrase of 2Pe3.15-16). So parts of Ruckman's style are tough and hard to understand, and it's difficult to know whether he's being facetious or stating a fact, just because he slams error in a laughable way. This is a more negative letter by Paul, and will continue in 2Corinthians to be as it's theme, the ministry.

Part 2-2Corinthians:
I thought for a long time I wanted to get Gordon Fee's commentary on Corinthians. Here in 2 Corinthians, Ruckman presents a more dry account of the "ministry." But one verse stood out to me, and I began an in-depth study on the "Discipleship and Shepherding Movement of the 70s and 80s in which I was involved in. That verse is 2Cor11.20, "For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself"--"They put up with "ministers" adding rules and regulations to salvation or keeping salvation....They put up with people who took their money and property"--personally made this commentary worth it to me. My will was taken from me. "The Enemy is the one who managed to obscure the Cross for us by tricking us to put our trust in men....The kind of control over my life that I permitted, believing it was biblical, amounted to idolatry. I committed to a man what should only be committed to God, and expected to receive from a man what can only come from God. Thinking I was doing God's will, I was actually committing spiritual adultery" (Ron & Viki Burks, Damaged Disciples (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1993, p. 163).
So for that very reason this commentary was helpful to me!

I have never seen a computer book like this before

So many programming books are dry as the paper they are printed on. Most courses in programming are equally dry. With this book the dry spell is over. Each chapter covers an interesting subject quickly and well. Yet the subjects covered are shockingly advanced. Genetic algorithms, neural networks, etc. Wow. These are topics that are usually each covered by at least one book for each topic. The mathematical explanations are the some of the simplest I have seen, ever.

I have been programming for over 20 years and thus have read so many computer books that were serious chores to read so, again, I can't quite express just how different this book is. It is like the book was written and the all the confusing bits were boiled away leaving this final product. I am truely at a loss for how to describe the virtues of this book without sounding like a marketing sound bite so I will say what it isn't. It isn't pedantic, academic, confusing, or contorted. The examples in the book are interesting or maybe even better described as cool. Often in CS books the examples are often uninteresting and thus unmemorable.

This book reminds me of a the opening of a great book on calculus called Calculus Made Easy by Silvanus P. Thompson where he basically says that most mathematicians write their texts to impress and show off how very clever they are but that he thought any fool could learn calulus so he removed the pedantry and made a great book.

I took the Nature of Code class as a master candidate at NYU ITP back in the Spring of 2012 with Dan Shiffman. Went through pretty much all of the material in this book as it iteratively evolved. This final product is amazing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in motion/physics/programmable art/games/etc. Dan is a great teacher, and this book is definitively reflective of his ability to communicate the concepts behind the Processing language in a simple and intuitive manner ... with a good bit of personality mixed in as well. There are wonderful illustrations and tons of supplementary materials online to make this book even better. It is also pink ... and that is awesome. Overall, you really can't go wrong with this book and it should be on the bookshelf of artists/designers/and coders of all kinds!

Excellent and accessible text on real-world simulation.

The Nature of Code addresses coding nature simulations in the Processing language. It covers real-world physics, using physics libraries (such as JBox2D), cellular automata, flocking and following behavior, and neural networking. While some of these subjects are daunting, Shiffman writes clearly, explains fundamental concepts, and leads the reader through each subject with code snippets and complete sketches. There are also specific chapter challenges and an overall, book-long coding challenge for the reader. This is not a beginner's book (see "Learning Processing" for that), but a book that coders with some experience in Processing can use with ease and profit.

Processing is not the ideal platform for game programming, but the first four chapters of this book present a solid physics background useful in any programming language, while the chapter on Physics libraries explains how to use physics engines, such as JBox2D, that were used in creation of famous apps like "Angry Birds". It would be of great use to aspiring games coders. The cellular automata and animal behavior chapters likewise would be of great use to coders working in robotics.

This book would be a perfect text for a high-school level physics class, as students could quickly learn and apply principles of gravitational attraction, force application, and Newtonian physics to their own computer simulations. The processing language used is available at no cost, and the book's accompanying code examples are well documented and useful. Not all the exercises set for the reader are solved, but enough examples are provided to encourage the reader to explore further.

Each of the seven Processing books I own (disclosure: I have only purchased the early PDF version of "The Nature of Code" ) have a different perspective and, ultimately, target a different audience. The Nature of Code, with its focus on real world physics, provides a solid base for both novice and more experienced coders. It's well written, useful, and a valuable addition to the growing body of Processing references.

This is a departure from my usual thrillers, mysteries and young adult novels. Poetry isn't my thing and neither is meditation, I'm a talker! Yet, I found myself turning page after page, reading and re-reading each poem, looking forward to the next. Some dark...some whimsical, even. I could see myself revisiting these words and finding something new each time, learning more about the writer and maybe myself. Read it- it's a gift!

Poetry has never been my thing. This book has opened my eyes to the experience of poetry, the beauty and sensuality and mysticism of it. I have never read anything that has raised such intense feelings and thoughts in me. Discussing these poems with a friend has shown me how different our impressions of the work are and how it can lead people to completely different places. That is fascinating to me. I want to read anything this poet writes. I feel such gratitude for having this world opened to me in a way I could access and process.
