I read this book during my first Ph.D. year. Coming from practice to study back again wasn't an easy thing to do. This book helped me to take a glance about the main discussions in the field. It is an eye-opening, inspirational espatially when synthesized with other readings from same authors. Moreover, the book well written and well organized.

Architectural Revolution by Information Revolution

We all know that information revolution has totally transformed the society. Architecture is no exception. Relative to industrial revolution's impact on architecture, "what has this recent revolution done to the field?" is the basic inquiry to the book. This book diligently answers to the question. It is extremely informative and provocative regarding digital technologies available for architecture.

As an outcome of a symposium held at U.Penn. in 2002, the book compiles various scholars and practitioners around the world. They grapple with the current technologies available to design and manufacture innovative shapes/forms/spaces that associate with digital aesthetics.

Spearheaded researchers such as Bill Mitchell(MIT), Chris Luebkeman(Arup), Ali Rahim (U.Penn), and Branko Kolarevic (U.Penn, chief editor of the book); and, cutting-edge practitioners such as Jim Glymph (Gehry), Hugh Whitehead (Foster & Partners), Bernhard Franken (Franken Architekten), etc.; both groups provide theoretical framework and actual applications.

It's interesting to point out that the authors deliberately associated digital architecture with smooth forms. Double curvatures deform structure/ skin/ space of the building. The new modes of design and production enables that complex geometries to be part of building industry.

As a reader, the most challenging claim of the book is that the authors
assert (some explicitly and some implicitly) on the new role of an architect. They believe that this new mode of production will revolutionize the client-architect-contractor relationship. Because architects will be the (single) dominant source of information on the three dimensionally morphed shape, manufacturers and fabricators would rely heavy on architects. The authors predict architect would regain absolute power of medieval master builders.

Great Compilation

This book provides a great overview of the developing technolgies in digital design and fabrication. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a comprehensive study in the current trends in digital architecture. A series of 20+ articles by designers working in this area of architecture, this book updates the conversation to what is happening today and what is being projected in the future. Great resource!

From accounts of true believers to the testimony of the relics' alleged fabricators, Nickell then presents all sides of each story, allowing the evidence to speak for itself. For each relic, Nickell evaluates both the corroborating and contradictory bodies of evidence and explores whether the relic and attributed miracles can be reconstructed. In addition to his own experiments, Nickell presents findings from the world's top scientists and historians regarding these controversial objects of reverence and ire, explaining the circumstances under which each case was examined. Radiocarbon dating and tests to determine the validity of substances such as blood or patina indicate a variety of possible origins. Nickell even reveals some of the techniques used to create archaeological forgeries and explains how investigators have exposed them. Each relic is a mystery to be solved; guided by the maxim, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof," Nickell seeks only the truth.

Christian communities all over the world hold sacred material artifacts that supposedly date to early Christianity—baby Jesus' swaddling clothes, pieces of the sponge from which the dying Jesus drank, even a tear Jesus shed at Lazarus's grave. In this quirky little book, Nickell (author of more than 20 books and columnist for Skeptical Inquirer) debunks those relics. Nickell examines the Shroud of Turin, the Crown of Thorns, chalices that people have identified as the Holy Grail and so on. Could any of these objects be what Christian enthusiasts claim? In Nickell's view, the answer is a simple no. He concludes that "not a single, reliably authenticated relic of Jesus exists." For example, a 2003 scientific examination of the so-called "Holy Lance," purported to be the spear with which Jesus was pierced on the Cross, found that the gold sheath dated to the 14th century. Nickell includes a bibliography, but footnotes, directing readers to the specific scientific research on which he relies in each chapter, would have been appropriate as well. One of the most interesting passages comes in the epilogue, where Nickell notes that some defenders of relics are sincere believers. A longer discussion of people's experiences with relics would have rounded out this book. (Mar.)

Relics of the Christ by Joe Nickell

There is strong historical accuracy in this book and it appears to fulfill the author's purpose to review many of the Relics related to the life and death of Jesus Christ. It did not provide me with a lot of the information I was seeking. My purpose was to find texts and documentation to assist with determining the authenticity of First Class Relics. I was seeking information about which Postulators certified which relics and how to determine if a relic or it's documentation and seals are actually real or fake. Some of the information in this book was helpful in this endeavor and the book is definitely informational in that it highlights those Relics that relate to Christ's life, but in all fairness to the author, my specific agenda was different than the author's.

Nevertheless, it is well written, full of facts and information, and a good addition to my library on the subject of Relics that are directly related to Christ.

A bit disappointed

Although the book presented an interesting topic, I was a bit disappointed in the content. The majority (not all) of the citations were from either encyclopedias or from "Relics" by Joan Cruz. The book also lacked any sort of bibliography. The author also based the methodology in his book on the "Occam's razor" principle, but curiously enough seemed to miss the point of this argument when discussing several relics.

The basic outline of each chapter was to present and article, give a brief history of its origin and provenance and then refute the authenticity of the relic. The book would have been much better if he had chosen less relics and focused more on the history, the provenance, and the arguments (both for and against) each relic rather than trying to squeeze in very little information on each. All of the information presented can be found on Wikipedia or some other online resource and was really not original research relying on "primary" sources. In my opinion, this book seemed more like a "report" written for a class, than the scholarly overview of relics it was portrayed as being.

Joe Nickell Always Gets It Right

He's so fair and thoughtful and willing to look at the evidence carefully. He doesn't just say,"This can't be," but says,"Really? Ok, let's check it out..." Of course he finds nothing, which should surprise neither secularists (who always suspected it was fiction) or believers (evidence doesn't matter to the truly faithful). And no, there's no good evidence that the so-called "Shroud of Turin" is anything other than what it looks like: an interesting medieval period painting.

Great coaching for the MSP startup

I love the practical detail, specific instructions and examples. The book focuses on the essentials of getting your business together and you in position to make your first sale. A lot of great coaching resources.

If you are ready to jump into the MSP business with both feet, commit to the timeline in the book and do each step before moving on to the next chapter. I wholeheartedly recommend the other resources referenced in each chapter as well. I got a lot value out of them.

You are not really a business until people are paying you for your service and you're not a success story before you're covering costs, so leverage this book to stay focused on each task. Some of the author's blog post are great for practical start-up advice as well.

Karl - once again you have outdone yourself! I devoured the first edition some time ago and as soon as I realized there was a second edition I didn't waste a moment getting my hands on it. I have been happily rewarded with up to date ideas and concepts that address the recent technological changes such as Cloud Computing. Even though I've been in the business providing these services for over 11 years, I'm ALWAYS looking to improve our service delivery for our customers and your ideas have proved to be insightful and practical in doing so! Thank you Karl for a great product at a great price!

I transitioned into Managed Services from break/fix almost two years ago. I had read a few books on Managed Services including the first edition of this book which was very helpful. When I found Karl's second edition of Managed Services in a Month, I could not wait to read it. This book has plenty of new topics including cloud technologies.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's honest, to the point and inspiring. I could not put it down once I started reading it. I felt as though I was spending the day with Karl, picking his brain about Managed Services. Thanks for a great book Karl!

A funny, poignant, sexy read which makes you think about love, life and family.

I got this book on recommendation from a friend thinking it would be a fun little voyeuristic romp of a read. Boy did I get more than I bargained for. Don't get me wrong, it is a fun titillating read with many laugh-out-loud moments. It also is the most thought-provoking book I've read in a very long time.

This book tells it all on so many different levels. It is a multiple-love story. Gracie writes poignantly about her love for her husband, Hank, her children and the family they're all part of. She writes about falling in love with Oz, and trying to put that love away to maintain her family. Ultimately, she realizes that she needs to do something different but has no idea what that would look like. She starts to unpack what family, marriage, love and sex mean to her. Following her heart, (sometimes down some blind alleys), she is ultimately able to create a non-traditional vision of family which works for all of them.

Gracie takes the reader along on the ride,confessing her innermost thoughts, feelings, desires and frustrations. She pulls no punches, least of all on herself. Her writing mixes moxie, sheer determination and terrible uncertainty, erotic energy and vulnerability. It's an incredibly fun read, one which I couldn't put down.

I finished it a few days ago, but it's still in my head. It's helping me unpack questions about my own life. What parts of it would I like to change, and how would I have the guts to do it.

Gracie X, You're my She-Ro

My favorite book this year! (which says a lot coming from a self proclaimed book worm) I couldn't put this courageous, sexy memoir down.
A must read for anyone who's ever had the haunting feeling that our current paradigm of matrimonial bliss is somehow amiss. I was reminded of an Alice Walker quote that states "No one is your friend who demands your silence or denies your right to grow." For how many of us has a relationship that started as something that felt limitless turned into what feels more akin to a cage? Lots of sex positive, pro-woman food for thought, whether you're in a long term relationship that could use a breath of new life, or you're currently exploring how you might want define your new relationship by your own design. For those of us willing to take what can feel like an unprecedented stance on romance, Love and sexuality, Gracie X tells us we're not alone. Her writing often feels like sharing the juicy confessions of wine time with your girls. I found myself applauding her on her journey, laughing and crying along with her. I commend her brave, saavy, bare all approach of embracing her own sexuality. I'm impressed by her ability to be simultaneously so playful and so dedicated to her own healing, both for the sake of her own happiness but also for her children and those who she defines as family.
Gracie X keeps it real, raising a lot of powerful, provocative questions without ever pretending to have all the answers. This book will definitely be the catalyst for stimulating conversation around the evolvement of 21st century Love in all of its manifestations.

A different kind of read that I needed.

I've put off writing this review, simply because I'm not sure how to write it. The book stirred all kinds of feelings in me, as a divorced woman in her 40s who has had marriages fail, and multiple relationships fail.

Wide Open tells the story of Gracie, who has been married many years to Hank. From my interpretation of the book, at the time they decided to open their marriage they had been married for 25 years. They had children later in life, so their son and daughter are five and ten when the decision is made.

The book chronicles their odyssey in finding discussing this decision, coming to the decision, the hard ships faced along the way. The ones that Gracie faces while trying to "date" after the decision is made? She faces what many single women in their 40s do. More difficult for us than it is for men - while Hank seems to find someone almost instantly, Gracie has issues. Further, she has feelings for a man named Oz who she taught pilates too and she really yearns to explore a relationship with him.

I found myself taking breaks from the book; yet, I did not want to stop reading. I wanted to know how this decision affected everyone involved (which I do not want to spoil by going into here). Many times, things the author said touched me and I simply had to stop reading to deal a bit with the emotions if stirred.

This book will not be for everyone. Those who do not believe in sex or any kind of intimate relationship outside of their marriage will probably not like it at all. What it did for me is bring up many good points about loving your spouse, even when the "spark" seems to die. How a person, no matter their age, wants to feel desirable and wanted by their partner; and that isn't in just a sexual manner either. It also reiterates my belief that you simply should not judge anyone else's lifestyle. What makes you happy and works for you may not work for others. To judge others and how they achieve their happiness is wrong.

I guess, for me, I was very moved by Gracie's feelings of feeling inadequate, of low self-esteem, and the frustration she felt in dealing with those emotions.

Again, not for everyone. But it was a much needed break for me as far as romance stories and the like.

A GREAT tool to start you on your way to better speech!

Although I have my criticisms about the book, it's a solid 5 in my experience.

The book was required reading for my Diction course in college, so I came to know the book under a dubious first impression. The quirky nature of my course lent a bit of frustration towards the book that was unwarranted.

Once we started to dive into the contents of the book, did I begin to understand why my professor chose this text.

PROS:
- Everything is laid out simply.
- Easy to understand and use.
- Effectively categorized phonetically.
- Exercises that are explained and thorough for recovering from various speech issues
- Existentialism ← Sorry, couldn't help myself, needed to add another E word for giggles.
- Spells out dialectical issues concerning region and linguistic.

CONS
- There appear to be some phonetic sounds that aren't included, notably the Ʋ sound (something of a combination of W and V), which I needed for a research project.
- Despite being easy to understand and use, there were times when I felt lost trying to find certain phonetic areas, but that could just be the way the author decided to organize, which may just be in contrast to my own desires.
- Could use some updated (and cleaner appearing) graphical representations of the anatomy presented therein.

Ever since I took this class, and was required to read this book, I've been trying to convince other people how valuable the entire experience has been. As a native English speaker with minor speech issues, I found the entire text to be a great way to improve my speech, and I can only imagine how this might help something with larger issues.

I rented the book for class, but I intend to buy it for my own personal use.
