Mona Ingram's books are always a pleasure to read. The only concern with this latest offering was that I would have like it to go on longer! Very easy to become lost in these characters. And I would have liked the ex-girlfriend to have gotten more come-uppance

Drawing upon his own broad experience and the characteristics of the six most common death-causing diseases, Nuland examines what death means to the doctor, patient, nurse, administrator, and family. Thought provoking and humane, his is not the usual syrup-and-generality approach to this well-worn topic. Fundamental to it are Nuland's experiences with the deaths of his aunt, his older brother, and a longtime patient. With each of these deaths, he made what he now sees as mistakes of denial, false hope, and refusal to abide by a patient's wishes. Disease, not death, is the real enemy, he reminds us, despite the facts that most deaths are unpleasant, painful, or agonized, and to argue otherwise is to plaster over the truth. The doctor, Nuland stresses, should instill in dying patients the hope not for a miraculous cure but for the dignity and high quality of the remainder of their lives as well as of what they have meant--and will continue to mean--to family, friends, and colleagues. Nuland also has strong feelings about suicide and "assisted death": the doctor should be prepared psychologically and practically to help the longtime patient slip off the scene in relative comfort. A sobering look at the clinical reality of death by a physician who wants it known that ``we rarely go gentle into that good night.'' Nuland (Yale Medical School; Doctors, 1988) takes the position that if we know the truth about the physical process of dying, we can rid ourselves of both our fears and our false expectations. By becoming familiar with the common patterns of illness, he says, we'll be better prepared to make appropriate decisions about continuing treatment or calling it quits. Nuland selects several common causes of death--heart attack, old age, Alzheimer's, violence, AIDS, and cancer--and, with unrelenting honesty and unsettling detail, shows precisely what happens to the body involved. His account of the decline and death of his grandmother--with whom he shared a bedroom until he was in his late teens and she in her late 90s--is unforgettable, as is his story of his well-intentioned mismanagement of the care of his older brother when he was dying of cancer. The emotional impact of these stories is quite different from that produced by the author's coldly clinical accounts (``a specific sequence of events takes place in people who bleed to death. At first, they will usually hyperventilate...''); but by demonstrating that dying is usually a messy business, Nuland succeeds in demythologizing death. His message is that the dignity we seek in dying must be found not in our final weeks, days, or moments--but in how we've lived our lives. Better therapy than a reading a grief book

My father died unexpectedly more than two months ago from a complicated pneumonia. It was a shock to us because he was a strong, healthy, never before hospitalized in his 64 years of life, and he was at the center of our family.
After his death, I was obsessed with finding and reading everything about diseases and death to deal with my sadness and to make sense of it all. When I stumbled on "How We Die" by Dr. Sherwin Nuland, sadly from reading an online obituary for him, I found so much comfort in his book. This book has served as daily therapy for my grief. It has helped me accepted my father's death and lessened the sense of guilt that I felt.
This book is one of those rare works that makes me pause to reflect life, helps me grow emotionally, and gives me comfort during this sad time. I wish I could write or email Dr. Nuland to thank you for his writing. Even though he's no longer with us, his writings will continue to have a big impact on new readers like me.

My Husband Died In My Arms.....

This book was a guiding light for me as I witnessed my sweet husband exhibit these symptoms and signs that death was near. He was not yet in hospice, but palliative care. We were alone here at home together just as he had wanted to be. I learned not to force liquids or food which is a mistake I would have undoubtedly made. Knowing brought peace and I'm grateful that a lot of medical people were not involved at the time of his death. He died from prostate cancer that had spread to his bones/skull, etc. Sunday, February 21,2016 in my arms.

This book is very helpful. The actual process of dying can be uncomfortable to consider and is not easy. I downloaded this book as I was sitting with my father when he was dying. I was wracked with guilt because I wasn't sure that I was doing what he needed from me. It was a lonely & frightening experience. The book helped me understand what my father was experiencing and, in the end, was a comfort to me so that I could try to be the best support to him. It made me more comfortable with the physiological process, so that I could focus on emotional support. I would recommend it to anyone who is facing the end of life with someone they love. I believe that, if there is a natural order of things, just as our parents are with us are we are born, we need to be with them to help them die.

About the Author
Maria Francisca Paredes Mendez is a native speaker from Spain and teaches Spanish at Western Washington University. Her doctorate focuses on Spanish literature from the 20th century. She is the author of the Temas and Plazas CD-ROMs.

Mark Harpring teaches Spanish at the University of Puget Sound. He is the author of the Mosaicos testing program and holds a Ph.D. in Nineteenth-Century Spanish literature.

Jose Ballesteros teaches at St. Mary's College of Maryland and his Ph.D. is on Golden Age Spanish literature.

Seems reasonable

It starts with showing the goal of financial freedom. Then it puts down fundamental analysis as requiring high skills. Then it shows advantages of technical trading. Then it lists the requirements of making a trading strategy, like having a historical data provider to back test. Then it covers trader's psychology: how a trader can feel about the sunk cost fallacy, fear when actually experiencing losses, and overconfidence. Then it lists tips from professional traders. Then it says how to make a trading strategy and lists four of them. Finally the author plugs his web site saying that it will help to make a personalized trading strategy.

The trading strategies listed in the book seem reasonable.

This is an ENLIGHTENING read to say the least takes the mystery out of leveraged trading strategies. We've all neurotically obsessed about the ups and downs and overlooked the bigger picture & game plan at times, but The 30-Minute Stock Trader breaks down the most common pitfalls and time wasting activities and offers a powerful system for amateur and pro investors alike.
