Beyond Biocentrism: Rethinking Time, Space, Consciousness, and the Illusion of Death, by Robert Lanza

Biocentrism shocked the world with a radical rethinking of the nature of reality.

But that was just the beginning.

In Beyond Biocentrism, acclaimed biologist Robert Lanza, one of TIME Magazine’s "100 Most Influential People in 2014," and leading astronomer Bob Berman, take the reader on an intellectual thrill-ride as they re-examine everything we thought we knew about life, death, the universe, and the nature of reality itself.

The first step is acknowledging that our existing model of reality is looking increasingly creaky in the face of recent scientific discoveries. Science tells us with some precision that the universe is 26.8 percent dark matter, 68.3 percent dark energy, and only 4.9 percent ordinary matter, but must confess that it doesn’t really know what dark matter is and knows even less about dark energy. Science is increasingly pointing toward an infinite universe but has no ability to explain what that really means. Concepts such as time, space, and even causality are increasingly being demonstrated as meaningless.

All of science is based on information passing through our consciousness but science hasn’t the foggiest idea what consciousness is, and it can’t explain the linkage between subatomic states and observation by conscious observers. Science describes life as an random occurrence in a dead universe but has no real understanding of how life began or why the universe appears to be exquisitely designed for the emergence of life.

The biocentrism theory isn’t a rejection of science. Quite the opposite. Biocentrism challenges us to fully accept the implications of the latest scientific findings in fields ranging from plant biology and cosmology to quantum entanglement and consciousness.

By listening to what the science is telling us, it becomes increasingly clear that life and consciousness are fundamental to any true understanding of the universe. This forces a fundamental rethinking of everything we thought we knew about life, death, and our place in the universe.

About the Author
Robert Lanza, MD is one of the most respected scientists in the world—a U.S. News & World Report cover story called him a “genius” and “renegade thinker,” even likening him to Einstein. Lanza is head of Astellas Global Regenerative Medicine, Ocata Chief Scientific Officer, and adjunct professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He was recognized by Time magazine in 2014 on its list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” Prospect magazine named him one of the Top 50 “World Thinkers” in 2015. He is credited with several hundred publications and inventions, and over thirty scientific books, including the definitive references in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicine. A former Fulbright Scholar, he studied with polio pioneer Jonas Salk and Nobel Laureates Gerald Edelman and Rodney Porter. He also worked closely (and coauthored a series of papers) with noted Harvard psychologist B. F. Skinner and heart transplant pioneer Christiaan Barnard. Dr. Lanza received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was both a University Scholar and Benjamin Franklin Scholar. Lanza was part of the team that cloned the world’s first human embryo, as well as the first to successfully generate stem cells from adults using somatic-cell nuclear transfer (therapeutic cloning). In 2001 he was also the first to clone an endangered species, and recently published the first-ever report of pluripotent stem cell use in humans.

Bob Berman is the longtime science editor of the Old Farmer’s Almanac, and contributing editor of Astronomy magazine, formerly with Discover from 1989 to 2006. He produces and narrates the weekly Strange Universe segment on WAMC Northeast Public Radio, heard in eight states, and has been a guest on such TV shows as Late Night with David Letterman. He taught physics and astronomy at New York's Marymount College in the 1990s, and is the author of eight popular books. His newest is Zoom: How Everything Moves (2014, Little Brown).

Book that will change one's understanding of their own existance
By Eugenia
The first thing I must say about this book it that there are not enough stars to describe what a good read this book truly is. Robert Lanza, MD teamed up with Bob Berman (astrophysicist) to write this wonderful 200 page book that for me -- finally put it all together. I studied physics and can say for myself that I have a mind of scientist that is (over)loaded with logic. But I am also a yoga teacher and since my father's death nearly 10 years ago, I have been actively looking for answers about death, immortality and nature of space and time. I read so many books about the topic, I lost count. That was until I came across this book. Authors finally put it all together for me that both my scientific, logical mind and my spiritual mind could put it all together in a manner that it finally all made sense.

One of the 'a-ha" moments was towards the end of the book when author Lanza acknowledges the fact that plants have consciousness. I was reading that part of the book on the train on my way form work and at one moment, I said out loud (without realizing it) - "Oh my God!" An older gentlemen, a professional man, sitting in a fine, tailored suit next to my seat, was startled and he replied: "Did you miss your train exit? Was I in a way?". I just looked at him and smiled and my response was simply:" Oh, no. It is just that I learned from this book that plants have consciousness! Can you believe it? And there is a proof!".. He was so kind, he looked at me and said after a longer pause replied: "Well, it does kind of make sense - the fact that plants have consciousness...." What can I say - I repeated the same story to my yoga students I was teaching that same night.

The fact is that this book is so rich with references to ancient philosophical books, logic from ancient Greece and how all of that information is relevant today. Authors provide scientific insight on classical physics (Newton) to modern physics (quantum mechanics and relativity). For me personally, this book, every single page of it was food for my soul. Not to mention that I was delighted to learn (and accept) the premise that authors have that, after all, we are all immortal. Some of the very fortunate people on earth experience enlightenment, and this book will show every reader that there is a potential in each and every one of us to experience it. This book opened my eyes to possibilities that no one has ever presented in such a concise and beautiful way before.

There is one portion of the book where authors discuss how human beings are used to observing and exploring universe by "looking" at the skies. This book missed it by a couple of months, since it's been announced a few months back that scientists in New Mexico, for the first time, "heard" creation of the black hole. This was just an idea that Einstein had nearly 50 years ago that the events in the universe can be heard and not just seen and it was only recently that scientists could prove that events in the universe can indeed be heard by human beings. Nevertheless, this book is priceless and I am keeping it as a reference in my library. It has underlining all over the place and I just cannot stop talking about it to everyone I know.

Another wonderful thing that must be mentioned is that one author (Lanza) relies strictly on science and logic, while the other co-author (Berman) believes in a "gut" feeling in spite of the fact that he received a training as a scientist. Perhaps the part of the reason is the fact that for the period of three weeks, Mr. Berman experienced enlightenment himself. I must quote one part of the book, where Mr. Berman says: "We trust our instincts. We need no textbook to teach us to love, or to recognize danger, or to be swept into a joy by a beautiful garden. Yet when it comes to grasping the nature of existence, we fumble and stumble through insensate theories, our eyes glazed over as we hear about string theory's extra dimensions".

My personal struggle my entire life has been to reconcile my scientific mind with my deep sense of intuition. For a long time I denied myself my intuition because my rational mind always felt that there has to be a rational "proof" first before I make up my mind and fully accept my gut feeling. This book has finally thought me a lesson that I will allow my intuition to lead me first, I will trust it unconditionally and rationality will follow in its own time and show itself when it is ready. For that lesson I am so thankful to both of these authors. They are my personal heroes.

Whose mind?
By Dienne
Sometimes it feels like my whole life has been a quest for truth. My mother is a devout Methodist while my father is agnostic (not that he really admits as much to my mother). While there are aspects of Christianity that I admire, I grew up knowing that I didn’t buy the whole package. In my teens and young adult years I looked to Eastern religion (Buddhism and Taoism most notably) and science for answers, but, while I’ve often felt like I’m on the verge of a great understanding, I’ve never really found what I’ve been looking for. In my older adult years I have largely abandoned the process. Partially because I’m too busy taking care of kids and putting food on the table, but partially because I’ve started to get the feeling that the quest is pointless.

So I was intrigued when I saw this book. Basically, we’re told, everything we “know” is wrong. I don’t find that much of a leap. At various points I found this book intriguing, exciting, challenging, fulfilling, baffling, irritating and exasperating. Any book that can do all that is probably well worth reading, even if you’re not fully on board with all of the conclusions.

The first half of the book is devoted to deconstructing what we think we know about the world. We delve into quantum theory, relativity and other theories to show that time and space don’t exist, at least not as we commonly perceive them. Contrary to what we “know” with science (not to mention what we feel in our guts), “spooky action at a distance” is not only possible, it’s quite common. Science is so focused on “objectivity” that it leaves a gaping hole in our knowledge – a hole that can only be filled by losing “objectivity”. That is, to really understand and make sense of what science has been telling us, we have to look to the observer – our own subjective sense. The authors take us through experiments like the double slit experiment, as well as looking at entangled twin particles that seem to know and replicate what the other is doing even if the other is galaxies away.

Next we delve into deconstructing the “dumb random universe” theory. Simply by looking at the chances that 10 books arranged randomly on a shelf would happen to end up in alphabetical order (a probability of about 1 in 3.5 million) we can see that it stretches credibility to believe that everything in our universe has ended up the way it is simply by random chance. The chances that a galaxy like ours would randomly have a solar system with a planet that is perfectly suited for life would simply happen because of particles randomly bumping into each other is so astronomical as to be impossible. The authors demolish the idea of string theory (the idea of multiple universes) as being a “theory of everything” and, hence, a theory of nothing. And in any case, even if this dumb random universe theory were correct, no one has yet given a satisfactory explanation as to how consciousness as arisen out of all of this randomness.

The later part of the book develops the authors’ answer to these dilemmas. We have been, in fact, starting backward, trying to arrive at consciousness by studying physics and biology. We should, rather start with consciousness and then the universe makes sense. There is, according to the authors, no “out there” out there. Everything happens in our minds, so it is our minds that we need to start with. In other words, thousands of years of exploration, observation and science have led us back to where the ancient Hindus started thousands of years ago.

I’ll have to admit first off that I am no scientific expert, so I did not follow all of the science in this book. A large part of science is being able to get your head around it – to be able to visualize, even roughly, what the theories and equations are pointing to. I admit I was often rather lost in this way. The authors develop their argument step-by-step, brick-by-brick in a seemingly incontrovertible way. But perhaps because I can’t get my head around it all, I remain skeptical. For one thing, I have to question their sources. Dr. Lanza is a medical doctor, and I have a hard time believing he also has a deep and thorough knowledge of theoretical physics – those are rather big fields for any one person to master. Berman seems to be more of a science generalist who came to the field because of his own “enlightenment” experience. Many of the references seem to come from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN and other layman’s magazines. Not to disparage those publications but, being as they are written for the lay audience, they are of necessity rather simplified. My field is psychology and I have read both academic journals and popular publications like PSYCHOLOGY TODAY. I can tell you that the latter is wildly simplified, often to the point of error.

But in any case, my real issue is that biocentrism doesn’t really solve or explain anything more than any other scientific or religious approach. It just raises more question – many of which are the same as any religion. If everything boils down to consciousness, whence did consciousness come from? Again, we’re back to an unexplainable first cause. Furthermore, whose consciousness? The authors frequently use the words “our mind”. Is this meant to imply a collective consciousness? I suppose so if we’re all part of some overarching consciousness and divisions and dualities are all illusions. (If not, we’re back to Descartes “I think, therefore I am” because I can only verify my own consciousness – perhaps I’m dreaming and making up everything else.)

If there really are no dualities and all is illusion, how did these illusions come to be? Did we each split ourselves off from this overarching consciousness? Or did this consciousness split us off? And in either case, why? What are we “here” for? And what happens after “death” (which doesn’t really exist)? Do we rejoin the larger consciousness? Will we retain any individual sense of ourselves as separate, or will we just merge into the larger whole (which, for all practical purposes is annihilation)? Biocentrism doesn’t answer these fundamental questions any better than “God did it” or “turtles all the way down”.

Moreover, if everything is consciousness and everything else is illusion, that renders life itself meaningless. If there is no death, then it doesn’t matter that people are dying of hunger or war or lack of medical care – they are just rejoining this larger consciousness sooner. In fact, we should all just lay down and die. What difference does suffering and evil and oppression make anyway? While I don’t buy into any of the Western religions, I do admire them for struggling with the meaning of life and death, good and evil, struggle and altruism.

Nonetheless, I am very glad I read this book and I have passed it on to other people and look forward to discussion on the issues raised. I was, as noted, very challenged by this book and it has opened up new possibilities. The book is well written and intriguing, and, despite my skepticism, not easily brushed off or dismissed. Incidentally, I have not read the first book. I would like to go back and see if that book answers any of the questions raised here. Whether you agree, disagree, or simply remain skeptical, I recommend reading this book for some very satisfying food for thought.

Wow!
By L. M. Keefer
If the last time you picked up a book on physics you read about string theory, you will be surprised that the physics world has moved on. Biocentrism is a new focus.

I never took physics - which my husband reminds me when I hang up his pants incorrectly (he hangs them up now) - but am fascinated by the deep metaphysical questions as to clues to how we are supposed to live our life. What matters? What are the laws governing the universe, and what are their implications for us? This book can be a page-turner if you are interested in those topics. I understood about 80% of it on a first read. It's narrated in an amusing, let-me-let-you-in-on-the-latest-discoveries-and-what-they-could-mean style. One critic called the style infectious, and that's an apt description.

Okay, so my take-aways from the book:

* there is no time - things happen simultaneously in experiments when separated

* there is no space - simultaneity points to no separation

* what we perceive is really in our consciousness

* there is no death - as our consciousness is continuous

* the universe is infinite - shows no signs of warping

* randomness is overrated - those million monkeys who were supposed to be able to type Shakespeare's complete works if given enough time? (I always doubted that.) Those monkeys are more apt to throw the keyboard around and use it as a toilet. Given trillions of years and many monkeys, they'd be lucky to come up with a sentence.

* the Big Bang is probably not causal - the odds of the moon acting the way it does which keeps our temperature livable is a rarity. There are too many coincidences which produced life. The Big Bang can't explain life.

* consciousness may be one - we may be connected to our environment and universe, so best to treat our environment well.

I enjoyed the author's discussion of how these topics have evolved over time, beginning with the Greeks. Interesting insights on how Judeo-Christian faiths include time into their theology as in do these good things and you will get to heaven. Of course, Jesus may have had unique insight on the universe when you look at some of his least understood sayings: the kingdom of heaven is within you, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, the kingdom of heaven is not lo here or lo there. Are these pointing to realities that reality isn't out there, and it's non-local? It's within us? Then there's: "Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven, and all these things shall be added unto you."

How about this quote by Jesus pointing to immediacy and the illusion of time? "Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest."

This book doesn't discuss these sayings, but it caused me to think of them. Here are some quotes from the book I found thought-worthy:

* We find ourselves to be conscious in a matrix we call the universe.

* Far less than one-trillionth of 1 percent of the cosmos lies within view of our telescopes.

* ... we need to know who experiences what, where these adventures take place, and how our lives unfold.

* Particles and photons - matter and energy - apparently transmit knowledge across the entire universe instantly. Light's travel time is no longer the limit.

* This is bizarre. Yet these results happen every time, without fail. They're telling us that an observer's mind determines physical behavior of external objects. Could it get any weirder?

* "In classical physics, the past is assumed to exist as a definite series of events, but according to quantum physics, the past, like the future is indefinite and exists only as a spectrum of possibilities." Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow

* Non-local correlation - What it really means is that there is an underlying reality that connects all the universe's contents.

* Experiment after experiment continues to suggest that we - consciousness, the mind - create space and time, not the other way around....Suffusing the cosmos is the realm of mind, whose observations cause objects to materialize, to assume one property or another, or to jump from one position to another without passing through any intervening space.

* But biocentrism makes sense of it all for the first time, because the mind is not secondary to a material universe. Rather, it is one with it.

* our senses are architecturally constructed to perceive what's useful in our everyday lives. What purpose would be served by perceiving the blinding ultra-energy that permeates every crevice of reality?

* We can always count things. No problem there. But when it comes to assessing POSSIBILITIES - on Earth or off it - we monkeys haven't got a chance.

* Randomness is not a tenable hypothesis.

* Direction matters because unlike all the other major moons of the solar system, ours is the only one that does orbit around its planet's equator....This is an extremely unlikely universe.

* The Sun - central to life - would not exist if any of the several of the universe's basic physical constants were even a paltry 1 percent different from their actual values. Earth has been hit by celestial objects, but not large enough to destroy it. It would have been a very different story if massive Jupiter didn't exist, gravitationally deflecting or altering the orbits of most incoming hazards.

* Certainly no single mental image can adequately capture BEING....But a good start is simply to see conscious experience as a swirl of information, while abandoning the notion that anything is truly external.

Loved this book - very provocative in a good way and quite readable even for folks who don't understand physics well enough to hang up a pair of pants correctly.

Okay textbook
By ltricia13
This is an ok book. It's more like anatomy and physiology. Doesnt FOCUS on nursing implications. They are scattered throughout the reading. Good for review.

Great book
By egnaro
I'm so happy I ordered this book. I'm new to critical care nursing in a consortium and this book has better explained things and helped to tie it all together from the lectures. If you have been out of school for a while the A&P reviews of systems at the beginning of the chapters are to the point, short but with enough info to jog your memory.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-Hill explains the violence, frustration, and dreams of economic opportunity that led to the African-American migration to the North at the beginning of the 20th century. He describes the sense of pride, responsibility, and rights engendered by participation in World War I and the white resentment that resulted in such violence that James Weldon Johnson "dubbed the summer of 1919 the `Red Summer'" in response to the bloodshed. The author discusses why blacks settled in Harlem and how it became the "Mecca of the New Negro," attracting the likes of Langston Hughes, Jean Toomer, and Claude McKay. Also highlighted are publications such as the National Urban League's Opportunity: A Journal of Negro Life, which not only supplied forums for these writers but also attempted to generate income for them and provide a sense of racial identity. Music, theater, and the visual arts are also covered. The book contains aspects of everyday culture, too, such as the role of churches, funeral processions, and rent parties. Numerous quotes from speeches, poems, articles, and other works are included. The volume is a visual feast, packed with contemporary photographs, reproductions, magazine covers, and posters, and enhanced by an interesting graphic design. Together, the words and images bring this extraordinary period to life. Pair it with James Haskins's The Harlem Renaissance (Millbrook, 1996), which remains the more in-depth textual overview.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 7-12. "In the 1920s, Harlem was hot!" With a beautiful open design, this illustrated history combines the politics of the black metropolis in the roaring 1920s with long, detailed chapters on the "blazing creativity" of performers, writers, visual artists, and intellectuals. Many readers will dip into pages that interest them. Others will appreciate the big picture, including the facts about the great migration from the South, the continuing racism, the debate concerning how blacks should win equal rights, and the call to get beyond sentimentality and propaganda. "We know we are beautiful. And ugly, too," Langston Hughes wrote in his groundbreaking essay "The Weary Blues," which is printed here in full, along with many other great selections from literature and journalism. The spacious pages are wonderful for browsing, with colored screens and reproductions of beautiful portraits, paintings, and neighborhood photos, many of them full page. Occasionally the text is dull. The biographies of Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston, for example, are little more than dutiful chronologies; far livelier are discussions of their works, which show how the writers changed the view of blacks--and changed America. The lengthy bibliography is excellent, but, unfortunately, there is no documentation of particular quotes. Hazel Rochman

Young adults (and even older ones!) will love this book
By AfroAmericanHeritage
This book is a visual feast and a joy to browse; the graphic design captures the energy of the Harlem Renaissance. It's like a scrapbook jammed with "rent party" tickets, dinner programs, book covers, letters, playbills, song lyrics and more. There is something here to capture the interest of even reluctant readers.
But the text also shines. The story of how and why Harlem came to be is told clearly and without mincing words: we learn the glorious achievements in art, music, theater, literature and just plain survival, but we also learn of the racism haunting the era, and the infighting within the Black community itself. I think readers will appreciate this honest, realistic approach, which brings the era to life.
By the way, given the graphic beauty of this book, the price is a steal!

An Ideal Resource of Educators and Students
By jftrey
Far from a simple survey of a period, this 150+ page text captures the vitality and vivacity of a time when African Americans made some of the greatest strides toward self-definition and self-determination. Moreover, Harlem Stomp! is especially useful because it does not pave over the tensions and troubles of the period. While the stories, biographies, and images reflect the glitter and glamour of the age, so too do the photographs, content, and tone shed light on the glaring racial inequalities of the time.

Setting the tone for the ways in which the text engages the time period, Chapter 1: The Smoldering Black Consciousness, 1900-1910, latches on to the intellectual back and forth between Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois--in the very first major section of the chapter! My students used the opening pages of the initial chapter as part of an exercise to determine points of comparison and contrast between Washington and Du Bois's ideas about the best course of African American efforts to achieve equality. Artwork by Aaron Douglas that often graced the covers of The Crisis provides an aesthetic anchor from the very beginning. The first chapter alone demonstrates the rising African American confidence and acts of self-assertion at the turn of the century.

Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, Bessie Smith, Cab Calloway, Augusta Savage, Alain Locke, Ella Fitzgerald, Chick Webb, and countless others all provide stories of passion and pride on each page. What makes this book such a gem is that it does not parade individuals along with little connection to context. Instead, each actor is part of the larger narrative that unfolds. Individual stories in this book provide a starting point for students to create biographies of major figures. (The book was so successful that when I assigned biographies to the class and allowed students to choose the figures they would study, I could invariably hand the book over to any student who expressed initial disinterest in beginning the project. "I don't want to do this, Mr. Smith." Within a few turns of the pages, the initially obstinate student would look up, with figure in mind, inspired by the stories told in the book. Each student was hooked.)

As I read Harlem Stomp! this past spring, I was stunned while reading about real estate and residential struggles that eventually gave way to Harlem as it was in the 1920s and 1930s. A massive power struggle between residents and real estate owners played out on the books pages. Indeed, I was reminded just have prominently conflicts over property influence politics of race and class. Similar topics, like the segregated nature of the Cotton Club, are presented faithfully and honestly on the books pages. In class, we were able to compare and contrast the exclusivity (based on race) of the Cotton Club with the more integrated Savoy Ballroom.

What spoke to me, and my students, so clearly was just how much the period of the Harlem Renaissance was characterized by black hope and pride. In 2010, students and teachers alike could use a strong dose of this same hope and pride.

Geared for kids but still informative
By Sarah L. Scott
This seems geared for the junior high school crowd, but there are still great pictures and it's pretty stuffed with information. Worthwhile buy.

Best prehosp pharm book out there
By Flight Monkey
Dr. Guy is a phenomenal educator and his pharm book is hands-down the best one out there--not just for paramedics but for all critical care transport professionals. It's well-laid out, concise, topical and easy to use in both clinical practice and as a teaching reference. Dr. Guy understands what it's like to be out on the streets (what, you mean our patients *don't* read the textbook?) and his case studies reflect that practical applicability. And let's face it, pharm can be a little boring, but Dr. Guy's mix of humor and expertise makes it kinda fun. Our flight crews often listen to his podcasts on the way back to base as quick, effective reviews of patho and pharm. This book and its accompanying Podcasts should be standard curriculum in any paramedic program. I would give this book six stars if I could.

Must have for any medic
By DentalRn
Dr. Guy offers his vast insight and knowledge on pharmacology to EMS providers on iTunes and now in paperback. His podcast, which are similiar to chapters in the book, are also excellent and I HIGHLY recommend them to any prehospital providers. The information he gives on medications most frequently used, routes and doses is up to date and easy to understand. Medication errors are becoming a common occurance and under stressful situations, even the most seasoned medic can make a critical error. Dr. Guy provides us with the upper hand in patient safety and advanced medication education.

As a book fanatic, this is my favorite paramedic book. Not only great pharmacology, but great scenarios for "real life" situations. You get to make the call, and read on and see if you were right. Cannot rate highly enough, GOOD INVESTMENT.

I loved this book and wish the author were around to write another. Whether an amateur musician or professional, this book has some out-of-the box ideas for improving practice and technique no matter instrument you play. I recently applied one of the techniques to a piece I was struggling with (moving to a recording of the piece) and it cleared up the rythmic issues I was having. The piece is now one of my favorites. I originally purchased the Kindle version and now also have a paper version to keep on hand as a reference.

Blaire Caruthers never wanted to work for his father at Caruthers Industries. He should have known that fixing the company’s show results was a mistake, and that choosing another man over kind, generous Frederic was an even bigger one. But the damage is done. To escape the fallout, he’s gone to Bluewater Bay to oversee the company’s interest in Wolf’s Landing merchandise.

Stuck in a small, nowhere town doing a job he hates, Blaire wants nothing more than to prove to Frederic he’s changed. However, Frederic struggles to trust the man who betrayed him once already. another great Bluewater instalment

How the Cookie Crumbles, A Bluewater Bay Novel, Jaime Samms.

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:LGBTQIA, Romance

More Bluewater...I love this series, with books written by different authors. I love the way people from earlier books crop up in cameo roles, it gives the series a real feeling of continuity. Jaime has written lots of novels, but this one is a first for me, it won’t be the last though, really enjoyed it.

Its fun how each writer has their own stamp, and yet the series still falls together so well with each new book. I have read most of them now and look forward to more...This time we meet baker Freddie, and Blaire, son of the TV network head. The network had run a reality style cooking competition, and Freddie and Blaire fell in and out of a potential relationshipthere, with Blaire rigging the competition to let his new lover, Jerry, win. Jerry is a real Bitch Queen, vicious, user of people type person and I enjoyed his appearances here, its good to have someone like him in a story.
Freddie used the hush money to buy his bakery, and should have been set for a profitable future, but things in his life interfere and he’s constantly running himself ragged trying to keep afloat. I loved Freddie, so loyal, adored his gran, tried to do his best for his dad even though the guy’s never been a good dad, far from it in fact, and Freddie is still affected by his upbringing. He fits in so well with the locals and the film people, he’s just such a sweetheart you can’t help loving him. He’s so stressed though, so on edge, overworking, not eating, not sleeping enough that he’s in danger of collapse. He’s so independent though he won't accept help, and to top it all off Blaire is back. That's all he needs, he’s still heartbroken at the way they ended. He’s rigidly cold to Blaire, polite– just, but makes it clear he isn’t welcome.
Blaire, well I didn’t like him at first, heseemeda typical money-will-buy-me-everything guy, and I couldn’t get over how he’d hurt Freddie. Blaire knows he c ocked up though, knows Freddie was the best thing in his life for a long while, and wants to try again. He’s got a tough road to tread though, he knows that, but he’s determined, and as things continued I began to see that he’d not intended to hurt Freddie, more a case of getting one over on his bigoted, controlling father and not thinking about the effect on Freddie. His dad isa horrible, very manipulative man, and I guess some of his lack of consideration rubbed off onto Blaire and that’s why he just didn’t think about the hurt he’d cause Freddie in what he did.
Slowly he works his way into Freddie’s life again . Its two steps forward and one back. He just can’t help his natural way of using money to solve things and Freddie won’t accept that. They have several struggles over things. Blaire only intends help and Freddie sees interference, Freddie just wants to make his shop work and Blaire sees him being a control freak and making himself ill. Its a fun read, very intuitive of human nature. There’s others in the book too, Alicia, camera woman ( I think) who’s a great friend to Freddie, Derek and Gin from the Burnt toast B&B ( great to read more of them), Lee and Vincent who work for Blaire’sfather and are his assistants, and many regulars in the bakery customers.

I loved the tenderness here, the way Blaire really had learned his lesson in treating people baldly, he works really hard to put things in place so that he can try to make amends to Freddieand also to help the town. He likes the people, the way they see him, speak to himand wants to be a part of it. He’s finally grown up, finally learned that his dad is never going to let up on the control, and that its time to let go, tostart looking at his ownlife and the effect he has on others.
I really enjoyed this story, the way it wasn’t the usual format with a build up to a huge drama towards the end, but full of minor ones along the way. I enjoyed the way Blaire stuck at it, didn't let Freddie rebuff him, kept his resolve, and finally saw what was important in his life. I loved the Freddie, Blaire, and Blaire’sdad showdown. Croutons at dawn, well– at suppertime anyway!

Stars: Five,another great Bluewater instalment

How the Cookie Crumbles
By Angie Elle
Thank you to RIPTIDE PUBLISHING and Netgalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

How the Cookie Crumbles was a sweet story about a man who doesn’t know when to ask for help because no one has ever been there for him, and the man determined to change that. This was the twelfth book in the Bluewater Bay series (all by different authors,) and I didn’t feel lost while reading it. There were some characters that I found interesting, so I will go back and check the back list for the series so I can find out if they have books.

Frederic and Blaire are on the outs at the start of the story, as their history didn’t leave them in a good place. But Blaire knows he made a mistake, and he’s here to prove to Frederic that he loves him and wants to be with him. After being paid off to keep silent about a rigged cooking show, Frederic makes his way to Bluewater Bay and starts his own bakery – Cookie Crumbles. Unfortunately, the money Frederic made from the reality show isn’t enough to keep him afloat and when his father bleeds him nearly dry, Frederic begins to work himself into the ground. Frederic was a bit scatterbrained, though I think this was more because he was overwhelmed by his to-do list than actually being ditzy, and he was incredibly clumsy. To be honest, this story reminded me very much of the billionaire trope saturating the market right now. Except this one happens to be about two men, and Frederic, while stereotypically clumsy (again, specific to this trope,) is way more likable and experienced than any of the clumsy heroines I’ve read. Whnen Blaire shows up, it’s under the guise of doing business for his father, but his work could have been done anywhere. Proximity is what he needs.

While this was told from both points of view, it was clearly Frederic’s story and Blaire was just along for the ride. Parts of it felt a bit slow; it centered mostly around Blaire trying to win Frederic back, and the back and forth was sometimes a bit much. While we are given a resolution to Frederic and Blaire’s situation, I feel like at the end of the book, Frederic was pulled out of character and maybe just a little too brazen for me to buy. My favorite parts of the story were their pasts – Frederic’s upbringing was very sad, and Blaire’s father was such a jerk there was no pleasing him. I did like what tore Blaire and Frederic apart, and Blaire’s revelations as he finally realized how much he’d hurt Frederic and that he’d taken much more from him than some reality show prize.

As I mentioned earlier, there were some interesting characters I’d like to read more about, and I liked the author’s writing style enough to read more from her. There was nothing extraordinary about How the Cookie Crumbles, but it was entertaining and I’m glad I read it.

A- rating...
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:

I've enjoyed most of the Bluewater Bay novels, but this one rates up there as one of my favorites in the series.

Blaire and Frederic have a history, but it's not a happy one. Blaire was in charge of a cooking show/contest that Frederic was participating in. He *thought* that he and Blaire had a connection so it was a blow to him to find out that not only had that not been true, but that Blaire rigged the contest so the guy who he was sleeping with won. It all came out and was a huge fiasco...one that Frederic got paid off so he'd never talk about it. But he needed the kitchen equipment, not the cash...for his bakery. His father wouldn't have been able to guilt him out of the equipment...like he has every bit of money Frederic has earned.

So, Frederick is in Bluewater Bay doing everything he can to make his struggling bakery a success. He works 18-22 hours a day and is exhausted. But he keeps thinking if he does one more thing, then he can make enough money to catch a break, hire a helper, or fix the oven that keeps malfunctioning. Then something else happens and it all comes crashing down.

And then Blaire walks back into his world...making everything just that much worse.

Screwing Frederic over was the biggest regret of Blaire's life. He's in Bluewater Bay hoping to fix that mistake. But he quickly realizes that Frederic needs more than just a boyfriend (one that he doesn't want anyway...there's no way he's going to trust Blaire again), he needs a keeper before he ends up dead from exhaustion or the klutziness that comes with that exhaustion. Blaire is also working to set up his own business out from under his father's thumb...so he has a lot on his plate too.

I really liked these two. I loved how much Frederic really needs Blaire, although he is so stubborn and independent, he refuses to give in. I love that Blaire is this totally put together gorgeous executive who should have it all together, but he's completely taken down at the knees by his need for Frederic. I loved that Frederic is so determined at the same time he's barely surviving, but that will of his was so freaking strong. I loved him and his determination...until it became dangerous. I loved that Blaire was able to see what Frederic needed and despite everything, he'd rather have Frederic mad and hate him than see Frederic suffer for his stubborn will to do it all himself.

There's a lot happening in this story...for both men and their family situation on top of them both struggling to get businesses off the ground. Top that off with a fledgling relationship...and yeah, they have way too much on their plates. A lot of stress. But even when Frederic was falling-down exhausted, they connected and wanted them to find their HEA in the worst way. It was a really good book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
