About the Author
Roy Herbert Jarrett (1874-1937) was a Chicago sales executive and advertising man. After many years of studying metaphysical success methods, Jarrett produced the landmark pamphlet It Works in 1926. It has since sold more than 1.5 million copies. In 1931 Jarrett followed up his mind-power classic with his second and final book, The Meaning of the Mark, which served as the “inner key” to his earlier volume. Here it is!

I have purchased many copies of It Works and passed them on to friends and family. I've downloaded it onto my Kindle, as well, so that the information is never far away whenever I need a boost of uplifting information on the law of attraction. I had no idea that there was a follow-up to It Works, and I ordered it immediately upon discovery. Let me say that I have read every page of The Meaning of the Mark: Discover the Mysterious Success Power Behind the Classic It Works, and plan to study it thoroughly. This is a book to read with a notepad nearby, because it is rich with information to study again and again.

I'd also like to add that It Works certainly does work -- if you study and apply the author's instructions. The Meaning of the Mark takes those instructions to a new level, giving the reader greater insight into the how and why of the process. If you have an opened mind, this book will serve you well. If you are convinced before you read that it is nonsense, save yourself the time and trouble, for it is guaranteed that it will not work.

Very highly recommended! Yes, it does work!

Are you ready to change your life?

Originally published in 1931, "The Meaning of the Mark" was written in order to add insight into the symbolism and instruction in Ray Herbert Jarrett's first publication -- "It Works". "It Works", a thirty-page pamphlet, has sold more than a million copies and continues to sell to this day. Five years after he published it, Jarrett decided that it was time to share the additional awareness he had gained into the text and the symbol of the cross and the square that appeared on the cover.

The plan outlined in both books is simple in its design and application. The correct practice of its content is slightly more complex. Human behavior is not easily reprogrammed. The analytical part of the brain does not easily relinquish authority to the knowing part of the brain. Aligning desire with intention, overcoming doubt, and remembering to be grateful are skills that require work. These are some of the things which Jarrett explains to his readers in "The Meaning of the Mark".

The original three-step plan for making dreams come true from "It Works" is recapped within this follow up treatise. The key to successful utilization of the plan, spelled out and elaborated upon, is contained within the pages. It is a very worthwhile investment indeed. Kudos to Tarcher/Penguin for bringing it back into circulation.

An oldie but a goodie

This book was first published in 1985, and at times it will seem a bit dated. Even though there are exceptions, the idea of the career oriented secretary starting an affair with the hard driving executive has sort of faded out in these times of sexual harrassment and hostile work environments. Nevertheless, if you consider it a bit of a period piece, you'll find this a delightful read. Rome is a sexy, aggressive business man who tragically lost his wife and two young sons in a car crash. A couple of years later he is still deeply grieving, but circumstances force him to spend some time with Sarah, his wife's former best friend and a beautiful co-worker that he has always found attractive. Sarah has long carried a secret torch for Rome, and despite her reservations she is privately thrilled when Rome starts pursing her. Rome obviously has some deep emotional issues to address, and Sarah's patient understanding and loving support allow him to work out those issues. At the same time, Rome's forceful personality help push her out of her cool reserve. The biggest hurdle facing them is that Sarah would love to have Rome's baby, but he is unable to tolerate the thought of another child. There's not much plot here, but the relationship is very intense and manages to carry the book quite nicely on its own. A very satisfying book that you can read again and again.

Gag me with a spoon!

I love just about everything by Linda Howard, but as we all know there are exceptions to every rule. Sarah is a seemingly intelligent woman, why she would ever put up with the verbal, mental, and emotional abuse is beyond me. But of course I can't fathom why she married the damned man in the first place. Rome is nothing more than a self absorbed spoiled brat who needs to be brought down a few notches. And Sarah, ooh Sarah. She apparently has self esteem issues and needs the help of a good head doctor.
Okay, picture this if you will. Sarah is in love with her best friend Diane's husband, Rome. One night in a very bad car accident, Diane dies along with her two sons. Both Sarah and Rome are devastated. Diane was like a sister to Sarah (even though she lusts after the woman's husband, some sister.) and poor Rome lost his perfect wife and children (even though he lusted after Sarah while his wife was still living and breathing, the dog!). One night while consoling each other Rome and Sarah have sex. No, they did not make love. Homeboy took her virginity on the floor no less! Be she didn't regret any of it because she was saving herself for him anyway (OH PLEASE!). Rome decides that his pride will not let him walk away from her and he must marry her to make things right. He just couldn't bring himself to treat Diane's best friend so horribly (then he shouldn't have had sex with her in the first place!). When she disagrees, he bullies her into saying yes and then tells her she needs to quit her job. It wouldn't look right, them working for the same company and all (can anyone say control freak?). Sara ends up pregnant, trust me when I say it is all Rome's fault. Rome refuses to accept the child because no baby will ever replace his dead sons (Well duh!). So Sara literally turns her world upside down to accommodate her warden, I mean husband and all she gets is ridiculed and told how perfect and wonderful Diane was and how she will never measure up.
If you like to see women treated like a sub-human species only put on this earth to cater to a Neanderthal's whims, then this book is for you! If you are like me and like to see equality between hero and heroine, then save your money or try Mr. Perfect or Son of the Morning. Both have strong women who can handle anything thrown their way, including their men.

I love Linda Howard but I hated this book! You have Rome who only marries Sarah so he can have regular sex. He treats her like a hooker (except she doesn't get paid), coming to "her" room, then leaving when he's done.
When she gets pregnant (his fault more than hers) he wants her to get an abortion. A man who lost two children to a terrible accident wants to intentionally get rid of another one? While she's pregnant he won't go near her after she starts to show and never does one kind thing for her. Doesn't rub her back, fix her meals, just basically ignores her. Leaves her to give birth to HIS child alone. Then she is so spineless that she lets him climb back into "her" bed afterwards. Worse, she allows him to put her in a position where she hides her child while he pretends it doesn't exist. What kind of mother is she?What kind of creature is he?
These are two of the worst characters I've ever read. She is a total wimp and he is a cold-hearted jerk!

Full of Warmth, Personality, and Inspiration

While I have not been a big fan of Bear Grylls' tv shows(for mostly superficial reasons), his name is so big in survival and outdoor education circles that I figured that I owed it to myself to check out this autobiography.

I am so glad that I did!

From the very beginning, the storytelling drew me in. The portrayal of the lives and often heroic actions of his ancestors warmed my heart in a way that few authors manage. Even better than the storytelling was Bear's insight into the attitudes and principles of these people and the explanations of how this history and these stories affected him and helped to shape him into the person that he is now.

The book continues with numerous personal stories of adventure in it's many forms.

This book and it's stories contain fantastic life lessons about:

-Learning from difficulty and mistakes

-Self-respect
-Knowing your limitations

This book was written in the first person and has a very conversational and warm style. When the author reveals personal information about his thoughts, fears, etc during a particular story, it feels like he is letting you in on a little secret. It was obvious that the book was professionally edited. Unfortunately, the kindle formatting left a little to be desired. The TOC is properly linked, but you cannot access the TOC direct from the "Go To..." menu. This would be inexcusable in a reference book, but for this autobiography, I doubt many people will be trying to repeatedly reference the TOC.

I absolutely recommend this book for:
- Anyone who enjoys a well-told story
- Anyone who enjoys adventure and the outdoors
- A young person who wants to learn
- Anyone who wants insight into the personality and person of Bear Grylls - Stalkers ;-)

Humble and determined to the end - a great inspiration

Bear Grylls is a household name due to his work on TV, primarily the show Man vs. Wild. However, his story is not that of just a TV presenter - it’s a curious combination of privilege and hardship, from his education at the world famous Eton College to his rather humble beginnings as a penniless karate instructor. He has suffered mightily in his years, but has also triumphed, and this is his story - one of determination, enthusiasm, and faith.

Mud, Sweat, and Tears isn’t necessarily the most well-written autobiography in existence, but it is easy to read, chopped into a hundred different stories covering his family, his upbringing, his grueling entrance into the UK’s Special Air Service and subsequent medical retirement following a skydiving injury that nearly left him paralyzed for life. Then on, to Mount Everest, his wife, and finally his burgeoning TV career.

What Grylls lacks in eloquence he makes up for in spades with genuinely interesting, funny, charming, heartbreaking, and unrelenting stories. He once appeared in a “Most Interesting Man in the World” Dos Equis commercial as a special adviser, but honestly he is probably the closest you can get to the Most Interesting Man in the World in real life.

Astonishingly, though, the one aspect of his life that shines through more than any other is just how humble and determined he is. He has had his share of lucky breaks, but also extreme adversity. While he certainly has enjoyed privileges, he’s also put in the work - and been justly rewarded. The book is well worth a read if for no other reason than to be inspired by the vision of hard work and relentless optimism.

Inspirational and motivating

The first time I watched Bear's show, Man vs Wild, I was pretty shocked by some of his actions but also in awe. While some episodes or instances have me changing the channel, unable to watch, there was that something which kept me coming back and I realized soon enough that it was admiration for his strength and motivation. I think for many viewers, they see in Bear what they themselves wished they possessed - the ability to throw off all restraints (metaphorically) and just take the plunge into the unknown. For me, I've always had a strong passion for mountaineering. The extent I let that passion take me was simply hiking up a few small mountains, and for the most part just sitting down and reading books or watching DVDs on the sport. It's easy to tell ourselves we can't do something and therefore we find ourselves in a position where we believe it and don't even try.

Reading Bear's book gave me inspiration and motivation far beyond that of Man vs Wild. Reading about the extremes that he pushed his body to go through out of sheer determination to join the Special Forces had me out of my chair the next day, pushing my body through a work-out I can't recall it ever being put through before. Bear also shows himself to be a very philosophical and perceptive individual, with a deep love of nature and life in general. His experience in Calcutta and subsequent brush with Mother Teresa is heart-felt and uplifting, and it gave me pause to reflect on the circumstances and privileges of my own life that I take for granted. I can't even begin to comprehend the level of strength and will power required to get back out there after breaking ones back, but Bear knew he had it in him and he kept going. Wow.

I can't recommend this book enough. Bear doesn't just stand for being an adrenaline junkie or yes, drinking your own piss, but rather he stands for the knowledge that we can be more, we can push ourselves more, and we can accomplish more - but we need the belief in ourselves, that determination, and a willingness to put in the hard work. Cheers Bear - you've said what I think a lot of us need to hear.

A very valuable resource - more than a beginners guide

As with other beginner's books by this publisher, the book starts by indicating the installation process, and the proverbial "hello, world" project. The example is very trivial, but serves the important explanation of project structure, what's what in the project. Testing gets paid attention, which is nice, and then some recommendations on additional tools for sprites, textures etc. Maybe the absolute beginner can feel a little bit daunted by the amount of info to digest in the first chapter, regarding the many classes and infrastructure that you need to make a simple hello world. Luckily as the book progresses the concepts get clarified and expanded on, and that is what chapter 2 does, because obviously the hints in the chapter 1 are not enough.

I personally prefer books that explain things first rather than other books that expect you to infer things from examples. I like that Chapter 2 explains the pieces that make Cocos tick, the Containers, Nodes, Scenes, Layers, the Director, Caches etc. The author then proceeds to guiding the unexperienced developer to a basic understanding of C++ Classes, header files and all, explaining almost every line, and finishes off by bridging the differences between C++ developers and Cocos2D developers so they are familiar with the common ground offered by the framework.

Without further ado, Chapter 3 sees us create the first game, where we finally start to see some action by adding resources, preloading sounds, targeting retina displays, extending CCSprite, and even adding multitouch. It's nice because a functional game is created step by step. One also realizes that game dev is relatively complex even when it's a simple game. The book again follows the way of showing the code and then proceeding to explain it line by line. Chapter 4, builds on the previous chapter to build now a different, more complex game. We're not just stuck to simple examples.

Chapter 5 continues wit this dynamic, building a different game, this time about rockets, this time introducing some particle physics, as the next level of complexity in your games.

Chapter 6. Different game. The twist comes with the introduction of testing and rapid prototyping using placeholders with the Cocos2D platform. The author now reveals this is how he created every example in the book. Abundant screenshots and lots of code accompany here. I think the chapter is well placed. You've followed how to code a couple of simple games, then you're shown some "secrets" and techniques for testing your ideas before investing lots. After the prototyping, chapter 7 actually builds the game with the real graphics, so you get the whole picture from concept testing to actual implementation.

Chapter 8 introduces Box2D, for adding realistic physics, that would be way too much effort to do on your own. Project creation is a breeze, but you got to take account of the differences between coding a game with Cocos and with Box (different classes, basically). It can look simplistic, in the sense that even when using a game library, a lot of tweaking for the right values of trajectories, where to place things, etc must be done.

Chapter 9 rounds off our game coding by introducing ancillary aspects, like reading/writing data, scenes, transitions, etc, which not being vital, are things every game needs. For me the game in this "level" ;-) is the funniest, but I am a platform buff. Notifications, via the observer pattern, are introduced too. Using the accelerometer in the device.

Chapter 10 closes the book by paying attention to what used to be a hell for me ten years ago when doing games for the j2me platform: portability. You get warned and then led to creating different projects for different devices / platforms and some additional tools. Appendix A then gives you some vector course 101 if you were a bit weak in that aspect.

Needless to say, a book like this is code-intensive, otherwise it would not be much worth. You could say that it reads as a series of tutorials of increasing complexity, the main chapters being self contained in this sense, which is good if you want to complete chapters one by one in easy sittings.

The games cannot be complex production pieces, that would exceed any book's scope, but I think they are enough to motivate you to start coding some game of your own. In that sense, the book gives you a more than adequate basis. For sure, if you not only read the book but take the trouble to type and make some changes of your own to the book, you will no doubt spend quite some hours engrossed with learning all this stuff. Be sure to check the code download, full of comments not present in the book for obvious reasons.

All in all, I'd say the book in this case is more than a beginner's guide. Nobody becomes a master of anything with just one book, but this one sets you off handsomely.

Definitely the best way to learn Cocos2d-X

Cocos2D-X stands as a great way to switch from single-platform to multi-platform game development. This great framework effectively allows developers to maintain a single codebase while publishing to a huge number of platforms. Although it is as great as it sounds, the amount of information available on how to learn/use it is scarce, to say the least.

This book - Cocos2d-X by Example Beginner's Guide - presents itself as THE way for experienced Cocos2d-iPhone developers to make the switch to multi-platform development, by using the Cocos2d-X framework. It accomplishes that feat by introducing the basics of the C++ programming language and explaining how you can apply your knowledge of Cocos2d to build great multi-platform games. It follows a step-by-step approach and provides detailed explanations on how to effectively transition from the Objective-C"-centric" Cocos2d-iPhone to the C++"-based" Cocos2d-X.

Throughout this book, you'll build five (somewhat complex) little games that will allow you to learn how to use texture atlases, handle animations, create parallax layers, handle physics and particles, among other essential tasks.

As it stands, this is the best Cocos2d-X resource I've encountered. It's aimed at experienced developers with knowledge of Cocos2d-iPhone, but I believe that it's actually pretty easy for an inexperienced programmer to gather some useful information from this book. The way that the author presents the information is clear and concise. He rarely misses important facts/info and even offers some extra tidbits of useful information along the way.

I came across a few inconsistencies and errors throughout the book, mainly in the code's formatting. A few times, the code examples mentioned variables that were presented with slightly different names within the Xcode project. Although that can be somewhat distracting, I was able to overcome these few hurdles with ease, mainly thanks to the way that the author clearly explains how everything works.

I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 due to the rare inconsistencies in the code formatting and also because the author assumes the developer is working on a Mac. It's understandable, due to the fact that this is aimed at the Cocos2d-iPhone developer. However, seeing as Cocos2d-X is a multi-platform framework, it would've been great to see a few instructions on how to setup and build projects on other platforms. Although the author does explain how to build for Android through Eclipse, he misses out on explaining how to create a Cocos2d-X project in Visual Studio and/or how to build an application for OS X or Windows.

Overall, it's a really great book for anyone interested in moving to multi-platform development by using one of the most popular game development frameworks available. It stands as the ultimate resource for learning how to develop games with Cocos2d-X and it's definitely a must-buy for anyone interested in doing so.

Absolutely necessary

My company has been working with cocos2d-x for more than a year. It's a great framework, but the problem with it has always been the information available: insufficient, fragmented, usually in Chinese (or in a rudimentary English).
This book takes the time to clearly explain most of how Cocos works and why. The examples are very good and easy to follow because the author explains regularly what has been done, going almost line for line. The writing is fun and the difficulty of the concepts introduced each chapter ramp up smoothly.

NOW THE RANT: I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the book assumes the reader is working in Xcode for deployment on iOS. Having worked on cocos2d-x before, I had no problem working on Windows 7 (Visual Studio 2010) instead and testing in the same machine, but I know how difficult it can be to get the framework to work on different environments. For instance, the third example (Rocket Through) crashes on Windows unless you make a simple change to a C++ class not referenced in the book.
The author could have added to his explanation of setting up the environment in Chapter 1 not only Xcode, but also Eclipse (for Android) and Visual Studio (for Windows), in case a beginner does not work on Apple machines (which is very common), and reference the little differences between implementation for all of them throughout the examples. Relating to the same problem (and this is being a little more nitpicky), some of the example code you can download (not all, which is weirder) is formatted for Mac and is a drag having to reformat each .cpp and .h file for Windows (if you don't, it won't build).

Other than that, the book is absolutely necessary if you want to start working on cocos2d-x. There are many, many things we learned the hard way that could have easily been learned in a few minutes or hours with this book. It closes the gap of the most basic information missing out there, although there are a lot of things that are probably not included related to deploying to different platforms and the common problems you can encounter while doing so.

This text explores a wealth of information unique to the choral conductor. Outstanding for all levels of students and teachers of conducting, Decker & Kirk's text is well organized and presents its eclectic contents from the most basic information to the advanced in an easy-to-read format that also allows the conductor quick reference in the future. Musical examples can be found throughout the text with sample markings that emphasize the teachings of each chapter. Other highlights of the text include:
A prologue discussing the importance of communication in a conductor; The relationship of the conducting gesture to the expression of the music (Chapter 1); An in-depth chapter on preparing the score with careful consideration to the historical perspective and score analysis. This section also includes models for score analysis and sample marked scores (Chapter 2); An extensive section on the role of the conductor in rehearsal, the reasons for careful preparation and planning, how to plan for different levels, and the choral instrument -- the physiology (breathing, phonation, amplification), diction, expression, and developmental exercises (Chapters 3-5); A chapter focusing on the criteria and guidelines for selecting repertory and building a program with your singers and audience in mind.

I am taking a conducting class in school. This is the text book for the class. Very useful. Help in communication is just what I need!! I would recommend this book to anyone who conducts a choir now or is planning to in the future either for a living or for Church, which is what I do.
