About the Author
Frederick Bettelheim was a distinguished university research professor at Adelphi University and a visiting scientist at the National Eye Institute. He co-authored seven editions of INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL, ORGANIC, AND BIOCHEMISTRY, ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, and several Laboratory Manuals. He is also the author of EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY and co-author of numerous monographs and research articles. Professor Bettelheim received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis.

Joseph M. Landesberg is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Adelphi University. He came to Adelphi University in the fall of 1966. Prior to that, he was at Columbia University where he took a postdoctoral position with Professor Gilbert Stork. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he wrote his thesis under the guidance of Professor Roy A. Olofson. Dr. Landesberg did his undergraduate work at Rutgers University.

Kindle edition is useless.

It would be nice if you could print from the Kindle edition, you know -- pre-lab and post-lab questions.... the kind an instructor expects you to turn in. Unfortunately you cannot. I thought I'd save some paper and only print off the pages I would need to fill out and submit to the instructor, while leaving the pages I didn't need to turn in unprinted.

The rationale I got for not being able to print was Amazon was protecting the content of the publisher. Ok, I get DRM -- I don't really agree with it because it severely limits the legitimate uses one might have for the content, as in this case. It's all very silly anyway -- a simple script to take screenshots of all the pages and assemble them into a pdf completely circumvents any protections the DRM is supposed to provide. There is absolutely no reason to have this as a Kindle Edition if you are unable to print from it, other than to help Jeff Bezos build a mansion in outer space. Do yourself a favor, and don't waste your time with the Kindle version.

Be careful!!

I am completely unhappy with this product. It was missing 8 of the 48 LAB report, 8 pre-lab questions and 8 post-lab questions..I wasted my money with this rental -- just buy it new. I understand some pages may be missing, but these are too many. Useless!!!!!

The previous reviews are spot on -- it was missing several pages -- noticeable by a quick glance through the lab book. I'm returning it and find this very inconvenient. I knew it was too good to be true -- a lab notebook rental.

About the Author

Dr. Jeffrey O. Hollinger graduated from Hofstra University in 1969 and received a dental degree and PhD from the University of Maryland in 1973 and 1981, respectively. In addition, he completed a dental residency program and craniofacial fellowship in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. Since 2000, Dr. Hollinger has been a tenured professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the departments of biomedical engineering and biological sciences. He is the director of the Bone Tissue Engineering Center at CMU.

From 1993 to 2000, he was a tenured professor at the Oregon Health Sciences University in the departments of surgery and developmental biology, and he directed the Northwest Wound Healing Center. In 1993 Dr. Hollinger retired from the U.S. Army as a colonel after serving 20 years of active duty. During that period, he was the director of the Army’s Bone Program, as well as the director of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry at the U.S. Army Institute of Dental Research at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He has over 35 years of experience in bone regeneration using biological factors, biomaterials, and preclinical animal models.

Dr. Hollinger has received numerous federal grants as the principal investigator (NIH, NSF, DoD, and NIST) focusing on applied and fundamental sciences for bone regeneration and is engaged with several industrial groups emphasizing bone regenerative therapeutics, as well as serving on corporate boards. Dr. Hollinger has several patents and has licensed technology developed in his lab. He received the prestigious Clemson Award in biomaterials in 2008. He has over 250 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, book chapters, and books.

Christmas magic!

Huge fan of the Chronicles of Kerrigan! I couldn't wait for this Novella and I wasn't disappointed! May does a great job introducing us to Rae kerrigan's father as a teenager. Simon Kerrigan.
I always pictured him mean and stuck-up, too smart for everyone else, but was pleasantly surprised. He's a nice kid. Now I want to find out what the heck happened along the way to change his mind-set.
I hope May continues this series with more great books!!

Oh I loved this! Just too short! Way too short! Beth is just so perfect.

I hope Rae one day discovers her parents' full story - well I guess she will since she has her mother back now. Must hear the rest, please release it soon!

In the process, the authorship of the book of Genesis has become a controversial topic. In this book, PJ Wiseman argues that the literary study of Genesis should begin with the sources that were available to its author (e.g., stone tablets). Wiseman presents often overlooked evidence from genealogies inscribed on Mesopotamian tables, which, taken together, form a pattern paralleled in the Hebrew Bible. In so doing, Wiseman challenges the conventional theory that Genesis was a series of documents strung together long after the times of Moses. Instead, this argument, shows it is not just plausible but probable that Moses compiled the Book of Genesis. Written by Percy Wiseman in 1945, and updated by Donald Wiseman in 1985. Percy Wiseman traveled extensively in the Middle East during his tenure as Air Commodore with the Royal Air Force, and saw these ancient tablets first-hand. Donald Wiseman was an archaeologist and epigraphist for the British Museum, and Professor of Assyriology in the University of London.

I love this book.

The most important and overlooked work on the first page of the Bible. Wiseman offers a simple, and I believe accurate explanation of the structure of Genesis 1. It is amazing that both the scientific and theological communities have missed this. It resolves once and for all the conflict between the Creationists and Evolutionists. Wiseman says, "If you're looking to this 'creation account' to learn the origin of life on earth, you're looking in the wrong place. The account doesn't address the mechanics of how things came to be." Wiseman has also published these ideas under the title "Creation Revealed in Six Days" - also out of print.

Evidence for the authorship of Genesis

For a while I suspected that there were written records passed down from patriarch to patriarch, carried on Noah's Ark, and continued to be passed down from patriarch to patriarch, till they got to Moses, the author of the book of Genesis. I shared my thoughts with my pastor, and he then went to his library and pulled out Ancient Records and the Structure of Genesis!

I took it home that night, and read the entire thing in one day!

We are often told that the most ancient people of Genesis didn't know how to write, that Moses was probably the first one who could write (because he learned how to write in the palace of Egypt). Isn't this the same thing we always hear -- that God's people aren't as smart or as capable as everyone else?

After reading Mr. Wiseman's book, in which he presents a very solid case, I came away believing that the ancient Patriarchs were indeed very intelligent people, and, in fact, they may have been the ones who developed writing and passed those skills on to their children, many of whom didn't stay faithful to God, but did go on to make a name for themselves in the world. So the backslidden kids got the credit for knowing how to write; but the Patriarchs faded from view (except for in the Bible narrative), because they weren't trying to make a name for themselves in the world, but rather stay true to God.

I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Interesting theory

The "Gilgamesh Epic" records a story of a world-wide flood and pre-dates Genesis. So some claim that this invalidates the Genesis record. But P.J. Wiseman presents an interesting theory in this regard in this book.
He believes that Moses did not WRITE Genesis but rather TRANSLATED it from ancient stone tablets written in Cuneiform script. The tablets each would have been originally written by eye-witnesses of the particular events, or those who received their information from eye-witnesses.
He breaks Genesis into parts according to the phrase "These are the generations" (KJV; "This is the history" - NKJV; "This the account" - NASB; NIV; Gen 2:4; 5:1; 6:9; 10:1; 11:10; 11:27; 25:12,9; 36:1,9; 37:2).
He compares the use of this phrase and the structure of each section to the stone tablets written in cuneiform script. Many of these tablets have been discovered and they date to the third millenium BC.
Wiseman's theory is that Genesis is translated from individual tablets which would have contained the material before each occurrence of the above phrase. So the narratives of the creation of the universe (Gen 1) and of the Garden of Eden (Gen 2) would have been written on one tablet by Adam as these events were revealed to him by the only Eye-witness of the events, God Himself.
The narratives of the Fall and subsequent events would have been written on another tablet by Adam as an eye-witness of the events. Adam then passed each of these tablets on to his descendant Seth. Seth then recorded the events of Gen 5 and passed the tablets to his descendant Noah. Noah then recorded the events of Gen 6-9 and passed the tablets to his descendant Shem, and so one until Joseph. Joseph then recorded the final chapters of Genesis and placed all of the tablets in the library of the pharaohs. Moses then, while in pharaoh's court, would have had access to these tablets. He then translated them into his native Hebrew.
The above theory "fits" with various evidences in the Scriptures. For instance, it would explain such passages as Exod 6:3: "I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, LORD [YHWH], I was not known to them." But the Tetragrammaton appears in Genesis, making for an apparent contradiction. However, this problem is easily explained if Moses translated, but did not write, Genesis. While translating, when Moses came across the name for God in the cuneiform tablets, he used the Name God revealed to him to translate it. So the Name YHWH was not known to Abraham and other Genesis figures.
Also, note that in the Bible Genesis is never said to be written by Moses, whereas the other four books of the Torah are. For instance, in Matt 18:4-5 Jesus refers to two quotes from Genesis. He introduces them with the general phrase, "Have you not read...." But in verse 8, when referring to a passage from Deuteronomy, Jesus specifically attributes the statement to Moses.
In addition, Wiseman's theory is consistent with the relationship of Gilgamesh and Genesis. There are some similarities between the two, yet many important differences. More specifically, if Genesis was translated from stone tablets written by the main characters of the events, then these tablets would pre-date the writing of Gilgamesh. Meanwhile, Gilgamesh was based on oral transmission of the events.
So the record in Genesis would be the accurate record; whereas Gilgamesh would be a somewhat "twisted" record. Being based on oral traditions passed over centuries, the latter would be expected to keep some of the main points intact but alter many of the details.
Wiseman's theory also fits with the archeological evidence of the character of the ancient cuneiform, stone tablets as compared to the Genesis narratives. There are many similarities in the writing structure between them. He summarizes all of the evidences on pages 144-148 of his book.
He concludes by stating: "These twenty-four strands woven together make a cumulative muster of evidences, so exceptional both in character and importance, that they establish the antiquity of Genesis as a contemporary record of events upon a sure foundation. This foundation is the internal testimony of the book itself, supported by the external corroboration of archeology."
I don't know if I agree with all of Wiseman's ideas. But I do find them interesting.

Comprehensive trauma nursing text & illustrations

Great trauma/emergency nursing text for both novice and experienced professionals. Both text & illustrations are great references. Though this 6th edition was published in 2006, it is still the latest edition released for the TNCC certification.

UPDATE: January 10, 2014

The first TNCC courses using 7th edition materials will begin after February 2014. I have not yet seen a 7th edition text available for TNCC students - only updated instructor materials.

This book addresses some of the issues in visual optics with a functional analysis of ocular aberrations, especially for the purpose of vision correction. Much needed book in this field

GM Dai did an excellent job with this book, and I will not be surprised if this becomes the commanding text in this field. Hartmann-Shack (HS) sensors are in pretty much every clinic and are used everyday to guide refractive surgery procedures (i.e. LASIK). So one would imagine that for the sake of the patient, he/she would like the wavefront map that pops onto the computer monitor for the doctor to see to be an accurate representation of his/her ocular wavefront map. Unfortunately, that's not the case these days. GM Dai goes over, step by step, how to get from a raw HS spot pattern image to the colorful surface plots representing the wavefront error that we are accustomed to seeing as customers or researchers. He does so through both zonal and modal methods and describes in detail, the pros and cons of the two. Other useful equations include refractive error calculations and ablation algorithms, which are all very well written.

GM Dai does not have a pure optics background, as his description of EM waves and image formation are technically incorrect. Also, he only included zonal reconstruction algorithm for square apertures (have you seen any square eyes lately?). I have implemented these algorithms for circular pupils, and believe me, it's a lot more complicated. These oversights warrant 1 less star. I also recently met GM Dai and tried to talk to him about my thoughts on wavefront reconstruction. He basically dismissed what I had to say which is not how we scientists should do things - that cost this book another star.
